SAVE MONEY ON HEATING YOUR HOME THIS WINTER!

 Well, the ground hog predicts six more weeks of winter! Here are some tips I found to help you save money on the cost of heating your home! 

1.  Change the air filter in your furnace every 3 months. They only cost a few dollars! Filters trap air born particles and prevent them from blocking the furnace's blower and clogging the coils. Clogged coils can’t heat the air passing over them. 

2.  Caulk air leaks! Again, a tube of caulk is only a few dollars! Move your hand around all the windows and doors in your home on a breezy day. If you feel a draft, there is cold air coming in and heat going out!

3.  One of the biggest areas heat escapes is right under the front door! Installing a door sweep is simple and easy to do or use a draft guard!

4.  Did you know cold air can seep through your electrical outlets? Plug any outlets located on walls that face the outdoors with those inexpensive plastic safety caps!

5.  Buy an insulation blanket on your hot water heater. It is relatively inexpensive and easy to put on. If you touch the heater and it’s hot, you are losing energy! It’s also a good idea to insulate any water pipes that are warm to the touch or go through unheated areas of the home. 

6.  A programmable thermostat is another inexpensive item that will help save money if used correctly!  Set it for the recommended 68 degrees when you are awake and lower when you are asleep or away.
