I am not at the age of retirement but in 15 years from now I will be, and for that reason, my husband and I took it upon us to go searching for a little piece of paradise in the sun. We looked at Brazil, Costa Rica, and Guatemala as ideal retirement places. Then we turned to get cheap property in Belize. What mostly attracts us was the country official government which is based on the British English system. Even though this tiny little country straddles between under-developing and developing phase, it has a lot to offer to outsiders like us. Over the span of two (2) years we researched Belize through the Internet. We contacted myriads of local Belizean and offshore realtors (European), all of them trying to woo us with properties for sale in Belize.
GO AND SEE THE COUNTRY FIRST
A word of advice, though, a visit to Belize is a must. I cannot stress how important it is. Go and see the country. It might not be your cup of tea. Belize has five (6) states or province or prefecture –whatever you please to call it. On the Caribbean coast, there are three (3) provinces – Corozal which borders on Mexico(not far from Cancun, Belize and Stann Creek in the centre and Toledo to the far south. Toward the west bordering on Guatemala are Orange Walk and Cayo provinces. We chose Cayo for many reasons. The temperature is smidgeon cooler and gets lot less rain fall in the summer than all the other provinces. Though Cayo is on a high elevation, one can enjoy a comfortable breezy 30C(74F)degree summer. Orange Walk is primarily forest; however,it is quickly being developed with the influx foreigners buying raw land. Corozal and the Cayes, Belize, Stann Creek and Toledo receive too much rain and at the mercy of storms, floods, hurricanes, mosquitoes, sand flies and gnats. Not surprisingly, Corozal, the Cayes and Cayo are most popular with Canadians and Americans. You won’t find big cities except for Belmopan, the new capital and Belize City the former capital. What you will find elsewhere are small quaint little towns with everything.
In May 2010 we travelled to Cayo, Belize to see the country for ourselves and to get cheap property. We already decided before-hand what we specifically wanted for permanent vacation spot . We were not looking for a mansion, just a modest two or three bedroom bungalow house with a living room, a dining room, laundry room and wrap-around verandah and a sizeable yard. First of all, we needed a place to stay during our vacation.
