Total Immersion Counts

Yes in Real Estate, total immersion counts.

The word immersion makes me think about diving into a swimming pool and ducking my whole body (including my head underwater). “Underwater” is not a term that would normally endear itself to any real estate professional because it has negative connotations to do with not keeping up with the finance repayments. In this context, the word total immersion does not literally mean getting soaked and is a truly positive word of expression to describe intensive study, “true grit” training or just living the part or lifestyle that’s an immediate goal or long term that you want to strive for.

When you exercise total immersion, you need to decide first and foremost, if you are ready to take the plunge, whether building a successful real estate team, working towards a specific goal or turning your company’s dream into a reality. You also need to decide to delegate responsibilities to each and everyone in the team because the amount of time to finish the task can very quickly surpass the number of hours in a day, week or month.

If you want to focus on your real estate business, learning the real estate business industry is just one small part of the whole process. And it’s not just the real estate business alone that you need to immerse yourself totally, you also have other obligations such as taking care of your family, friends, exercise, and so on. With all these important tasks around you that needs special attention at the same time you will probably get crazy before you taste success. So you need to effectively manage your time.

Let’s discuss the following few steps on total immersion that can help you those first steps as you get your real estate business off the ground:

Planning

This is where you formulate your detailed plans of attack to achieve optimum balance of needs and demands on key important things such as your goals and deadlines, comprehensive list of tasks that are required of you on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. You will also need to formulate strategies to achieve them. Concentrate on the task one hundred percent and declare to yourself that you are going to pay full attention to the work at hand. Apply total immersion.

Prioritize

List down all the tasks that you need to address and determine the order of dealing these tasks according to their relative importance. Do the task first which is more aligned to your goal. It is essential that you understand that not everything is as important as the others. By finishing the most important tasks first, you won’t feel any stress at all because you know you’ve already handled the things that are most critical.

Commitment

Develop a strong desire to fulfill the purpose and commit to complete the tasks at hand. Believe in yourself and expect to be successful on what you intend to do. Do not allow any external factors to disturb your effort because you are on your way to achieving that goal. Give your full concentration, apply the technique of total immersion.

Self-Discipline

It will be easy for you to concentrate when you are following a schedule. When you do something else other than what was on your schedule then it is a bad habit! Do one thing at a time. When you focus all your energy into one task for a few minutes then you can expect productivity by completely immersing yourself with the task. Your joy of finishing one task can motivate you to finish another task and so on.

Do It Everyday

If you are doing your job everyday then you’ll have a daily practice routine that helps allocate your time to various areas of improvement and keeps you on task.

Reward yourself

What gets rewarded gets repeated. That’s how human behaviors and habits are created in relation to a Psychologist B.F. Skinner’s quote, “A behavior followed by a reinforcing stimulus results in an increased probability of that behavior occurring in the future.” Adopt this quote in what you do by rewarding yourself when you accomplished a task. If you don’t enjoy the task but are responsible enough to accomplish that task then rewarding yourself would motivate you to finish because of the anticipation of the reward that you promise yourself after it is done.

Knowing the things that you really want to achieve in life, being totally determined to achieve these things and always paying attention to all the tasks that takes you near to your goal can help you get there in no time. Make a habit of immersing yourself fully on the task daily and be done with it. Practice doing one thing at a time and exercise total immersion on your tasks consistently and strive for perfection. Stick to this habit and become intensely focused on your task. You’ll find over a short period of time that you can finish a great deal of your task in an easy manner.

  1. great post, and is what I am practicing in my life right now.

  2. There is a book called The One that advocates focusing attention by asking the following question in each of the subject areas that make up your life: "what is the ONE thing that by doing it everything else will become easier or unnecessary?" Damn is it hard.
