While the ideal condo for each person's Playa del Carmen retirement depends heavily on each person's tastes, the following are a few points to consider. Most points could, of course, go either way ...
1. Walking distance to services. Most retirees are looking for the type of relaxation that includes being able to walk short distances to some stores, restaurants and services. Of course, this depends on taste; maybe one convenience store is enough, while others may prefer being right downtown, or next to the mall.
2. Access to the Beach. The beach is one of the main reasons to live in Mexico, especially a place like Playa del Carmen. For those who like walking, even 5-6 blocks back from the beach is still a reasonable walk. Being right on the beach is usually not necessary, and tends to be considerably more expensive. Others may just want to consider the ease of transportation from access points.
3. Stairs/Elevator. Most retirees prefer either living on the bottom floor, or having elevator access to upper floors. Some retirees looking for a more active lifestyle don't mind one flight of stairs.
4. Condo/Complex style. The two main choices in Playa del Carmen real estateare contemporary or something that looks a little more traditionally Mexican; a blend of the two is also possible. This point is entirely personal preference.
5. Neighbors. Usually it's nice to live in a complex or neighborhood where there are others from Canada or the U.S. Most communities in Playa del Carmen are somewhat mixed, with some Europeans in the blend, and most expats will also get to know a few of the locals.
