The things kids say!

Being a landlord is not 100% fun -- it's a business, after all. But there are a few times when it can give you a little laugh.

I bought a side-by-side duplex from a private seller in June 2011. One side had existing tenants that I still have to this day. The prior landlord did keep the major items in good repair (new furnaces, etc.) but let some little things slide. For example, the kitchen had peeling wallpaper that was very dated. Last summer, I took down all the wallpaper and painted the kitchen a very neutral beige color.

This year, I did some renovation to the upper bathroom. The bath had an older wooden framed window in the shower area as well as 4x4 tiles that were not in the best shape. So the entire window was replaced with glass block with vent, and the tub surround was completely torn out and replaced with nice brown 12x12 ceramic tile. Also, a new tub/shower faucet was installed and we painted the bathroom a light beige color. The whole bathroom looks completely transformed.

(I'll also mention that I met the contractor who did the bathroom work from a recent Milwaukee Bigger Pockets meet up.)

When the bathroom was done being painted and we came downstairs to tell the tenants, the kids raced upstairs to see the changes. One of the younger boys told us, "When I take a shower now, it's like I'm in Vegas!"

I'm not exactly sure he thinks Vegas is like, but I'll take that as a compliment.

  1. Our showers here (Afghanistan) feel like heaven when the water is working

  2. ROFL! Kids say the most awesome stuff! When my son was a toddler, if we passed by a dilapidated house, he would say, "look Daddy, that house needs you!"

  3. Well done. That kid must have suffered with the 4x4 tile.
