If you’re under 34 and are looking for the perfect city in which to live in and prosper with job opportunities, a great nightlife and plenty to do, then consider Charlotte NC for your new home.

Data has made it clear that Charlotte has quickly become a very popular stop for millennials and one of the best places to live.

Director of Carolina Demography at UNC Chapel Hill’s Carolina Demography Canter, Dr. Rebecca Tippet, presented data last week showcasing the population migration trends happening in Charlotte. The information included 12 counties, 9 in North Carolina and 3 in the South Carolina area. Dr. Tippet’s presentation showed that an average of 109 people moved to Charlotte MSA daily between April 1, 2010 and July 1, 2015.

Most of the migrants were composed of post-college graduates.

Dr. Rebecca Tippet explained that Charlotte is known as being a destination for work opportunities, and that it has net in-migration in all age groups, but more specifically for those ages 18-34. Many individuals who have recently obtained a college degree are pulled towards Charlotte because of good employment.

In 2015, metro Charlotte had an in-migration of approximately 123,000 and an out-migration of approximately 89,000. This makes for a net-migration of 34,000 in 2015. A lot of those individuals that left Charlotte belong to the millennials group who are high school graduates moving to other parts of North Carolina if not out of state for college.

Approximately 25% of people coming into Mecklenburg and surrounding counties are coming from North Carolina, while 10% are from South Carolina and 6% are from New York. At the international level, about 7% of the net migration includes individuals from other countries, with the top countries including India, China and Mexico.

Dr. Rebecca Tippett further explained that the majority of the migration in Charlotte MSA is occurring within the region, with about 268,000 people moving inside the region last year. About 80% of the net migration moved within their own county, with a noticeable trend in Mecklenburg for individuals moving out to surrounding counties for better schools and home values.

Tippett explained that Mecklenburg county has been a channel that connects young, highly-educated adults. Moving to areas or communities that have a family-oriented, suburban profile like that in York, Union and Cabarrus county play a vital role.
