REI-guru junk, and saving you $97
I'll try and keep this one short and sweet. Being my first blog post, I'll start with my first taste of real estate investing.
I'm 22 years old and I have one semester left at Central Michigan University until I finally receive my degree I'm political science and economics (snore). When I started thinking about my future, I didn't want to be out of school working a job until I day I die living pay check to paycheck-paying for things I don't need with money I don't have. I wanted to find a way to make decent money doing something I enjoy. I also wanted to have the freedom to spend time with the people I care about and do other things I enjoy.
I wrestled for CMU for 4 years and you don't go pro in wrestling-so that wasn't the answer. Politics interested me until I learned how politics really work. It's getting harder and harder to find entry level positions-it will be even tougher with a bunch of states proposing a $15/hour min. wage. Real estate interested me and seemed like the way to go...because honestly, nobody wants to start out at McDonalds
Somehow I came across real estate mogul-which is the most annoying website in the world. It told me everything I wanted to hear about making money investing in real estate-but as many people involved in real estate know, this was a guru pitching sale after sale. He would suck me in until the end of something only to hear: "only $97" for this, or $97 for that. I got a month long membership. Thankfully the day before the end of that month I called and got a refund for this. But they then offered me a bulk of training items for $197. No way. They then called me back later that week and asked if I would be interested in coming to California to have a real estate mentor-for only $1197! BiggerPockets likes "tweetable topics" so here's my best shot at one...any sales pitch that seems fishy ending in 97 is a load a garbage.
BiggerPockets.com has provided me all of the resources I need, and I love the community atmosphere. Some of the smartest people in the industry are on here everyday and are more than willing to answer any questions. And the crazy part-they are not asking for $97 either.
I have studied REI now for a little over a year. But after 3 or 4 months on BP I'm currently in negotiation for 3 different deals (as of today), and I'm in the process of having an attorney write up the contract for an offer that was (surprisingly) accepted.
I'll stop rambling now but I just wanted to put it out there that my career has been launched because of BP. I couldn't be more pleased.

you're right, some of their info is decent but the sales pitches are unbearable. Glad I'm not the only one who's been there.

You're right. Some guru's have some decent info, but most of it is overpriced junk.

And Bigger Pockets doesn't try to upsell you to a $30,000 "bus tour" or whatever the gurus are pitching these days ...
