More than you can chew

I was having dinner with a friend the other night and he was telling me about his investment goals for the future.  All of the real estate ventures that he wants to start and different business models that he would like to create were very interesting, but it left me with an impression.

The impression was this: Wow, the things that he is saying are great, but we both know that it will take years to set up.  Let us focus on today's challenges before we tackle on too many of tomorrows.

To be honest, I see it a lot.  At networking events and at parties.  Everyone is trying to be successful, but most of the people that I spoke with last year are in the same place as this year.  Why is that?  Well, I believe that it is because of the way that the human mind operates.

Most of us at some point daydream about the future and about the success that we wish for our lives.  We imagine all of the luxuries and peace of mind that we will have from the accomplishments that we have not yet achieved.  This is human nature.  However, sometimes we spend more time daydreaming and not enough time simply doing that one or two small things that we could do that day to move our lives forward in a positive fashion.

The plague of youth is to over think every situation and be paralyzed.  This is why younger people tend to say, "I don't know what to do with my life".  This plague morphs into the plague of adulthood which leads people to say, "I feel as though I am not achieving enough" or "I need more money".  It is important to realize that there is always a reason and usually the reason is you.  Think about it, if Albert Einstein sat in his room all day doing nothing would the history books remember him for his intelligence? No.

So why did I just bring up these thoughts? That is because those same thoughts are what prevent us from actually achieving what we want.  To progress is to act, so when we start making too many plans and not acting on them we will never progress.

The point of the blog is truly this: Think of one task that if you completed right now would progress your life in a positive way and complete it.  If you can do that every day then you will eventually achieve your goals, but if there are too many tasks you need to pick the important ones and stick to them.  If you bite off more than you can chew then you will always choke.
