Focus on Business Building: Part Two

Operating manuals, procedures, forms....man weren't we happy as ever to escape these things and the corporate lives that seemed to have us trapped.  Dealing with the 9-5 job which seemed to have us wishing to throw binders of manuals into a bonfire and roast some marshmallows.  

Of course, what some may find when they escape the so called comforts of the corporate world, is that some things we use to hate, are actually things that we need!

In order to build systems, and to empower your staff, having guidance to lead to success is born from writing down what you do to be successful.  These tasks, which could include your 10 calls per day, 10 posts per day, emails, bandit signs, or whatever may be regular tasks should be written down.  These small things are how you operate.  If you want to have, or need to have staff, you want them replicating your successful strategies.  

Working for yourself sounds great to those that escape. No longer having a timeclock.  Not having to report to a boss about your latest report, reconciling the books, talking to customers.  

But then as a business owner, you find that these things in your own business needs to be done.  So do you take on those tasks?  Sure, at first, but as discussed in a prior post, it was mentioned that doing so only means you left your last job to create a new job, and not a business.

Operational manuals speak to the generalized tasks and objectives of the business to lead to success.  It is the basic overview of the business which others will follow as they become a part of your organization.  And every business, with their own vision and goals, will have different manuals to lead them.  But don't be fooled.  If you are going to have a more than one person show, you will need to have organization.

It is the basis for successful operations, as you can train people with the same processes that made you successful from the beginning.  But it is also a living document as your business changes.  You find new methods that make your day to day operations easier.  You find new scripts, you find new tools, or you change technology, so you have to update the document.

This is part of the CEO and COO hat you wear as a business owner.  This is where you lead.
