How To Network At A Meetup Like You Know What You Are Doing

Networking events are a great way to make those important connections that you need to succeed in the REI world. Although they are easy to show up at, they can also be quite difficult for the introvert to include themselves in. A lot of the events can seem a bit cliquey so how do you break into the crowd?

1. At most REI meetups everyone is dressed fairly casual. Nice, but casual (at least that's how it is in Colorado where running shorts can be considered dress attire). Showing up in a suit is just going to make you seem like you're trying too hard. Don't show up looking ratty or too dressy, just a nice mid point.

2. Get yourself something to hold like a drink. It makes you look less nervous since your hands won't just be resting in your pockets or at your side.

3. Don't stand too far away from the crowd. Sometimes being close to one of the conversations will cause one of the group to invite you in. This doesn't always work, but can be a useful way to get included without having to make the introduction yourself.

4. If you have interacted with someone online a little bit who seemed friendly then try to find them. They are more likely to have at least a vague memory of you so breaking the ice should at least be a little easier. A majority of the time someone who is friendly online is friendly in person. This does not always go the other way, but it is a good guideline.

5. Pick out someone who looks just like you, standing by themselves with a drink. Remember that they're probably there for the same reason that you are. You already know that there is a common interest of some sort. It's not a first date, just a potentially good conversation. I like to use the questions "Are you here for the real estate meetup?" and "What within real estate interests you?".

6. If you have completed step 5 then you are instantly one of the groups that people are more likely to join. If you're having good conversation others pick up on it and those who are more bold will generally try to find their way into it.

7. After starting any conversation just be honest. If you're new then say that. Those who are experienced are usually willing to give you tips and advice, but will also easily pick up on BS when they hear it. The point of these conversations is to build relationships with these people, so don't kill that chance right from the start.

8. Bring some business cards of some sort. Don't hand them out instantly, but if you're having good conversations then there is a good likelihood that you'll be exchanging information.

I make a note to try to include the people who are hanging out on the border if I can. It helps make the community better and more welcoming. If you are a seasoned pro of meetups I ask that you do the same.

If you follow some of the steps above then you should have some luck in creating some good potential connections for your REI hobby/career. Remember that networking is one of the biggest things you can use in this business so it is worth your time to become proficient at it.

  1. Great Blog! I am going to my first REI meeting on Jan 26th and will certainly take this in consideration. I'm gonna start this New Year off right!
