Top 5 Tips for Growing Better Teams

Write Better Job Descriptions

A vague job description isn’t going to do you any favors. When looking for someone to fill a role, be concise but clear in your written advertisements. Applicants should know what to expect out of the job on a basic level, and what will be required of them. Not only should you talk about the role itself, but how it relates to the company as a whole.

Provide some information about your company as well, including values and big-picture goals. The more specific you are, the less likely you are to end up with applicants who don’t fit.

Practice Transparency

Both in the hiring process and in day-to-day goings on, transparency is a highly coveted quality in a boss. While you don’t necessarily need everyone to know everything about the business, you should make a point to be clear about your expectations from your team. Don’t leave them guessing. If a task or role isn’t clear, employees are much more likely to waste time. Be honest, open, and as available as you can be. It's a business strategy that will serve you well.

Give Culture a Place to Grow

Do you value culture in your business? Whether you think it’s important or not, it exists. Bad culture can lead to frustration, stress and high turnover, while good culture can increase a sense of togetherness and community that encourages your team to do their best work. Take time for social activities and crafting a rapport with your team. It’s worth the investment.

Let Employees Own Their Work

Nothing hurts a team quite like micro-managing. While it’s all fine and good to offer constructive criticism and guidance along the way, micro-managing is a surefire way to shoot yourself in the foot. Steer clear of being too nitpicky during the process or “fixing” things for your employees. Allow them to have an agency and a voice in their work. They’re far more likely to produce things that they’re proud of and develop and autonomy that allows for greater efficiency.

Make Your Priorities Clear from the Get-Go

Again, if goals aren’t clear, goals won’t be met. Don’t keep your priorities or expectations a mystery to your team. No one can read minds, and even if you think you should’ve have to spell it out, you should make yourself accessible for clarification and reiterate the things that are important to your business. Clarity is key to increasing productivity.
