Marsha you can give really good advice. Hud certified housing counseling agency for assistance.
Contacting HUD is a good idea. There may also be local groups set up by the city, county (parish, I guess in your case) or state to provide help.
However, you've given no information. Just because the house is worth $90K and you owe $140K doesn't make it unaffordable. If you bought with a fixed rate loan, the payments are the same as when you started.
So, something must have changed that's causing you to not be able to make the payments now. Please explain.
How much do you (and your spouse, if applicable) make? What is your interest rate? 90k doesn't seem un-manageable..
You must take a pro-active approach. Much like your activity here in the forum. Talk to your lender, talk to the members here in the group. Call up a realtor or appraiser and find out what's going on value wise in you neighborhood. Who's your lender? What programs do they offer? Take an assessment of your personal financial situation. Will you be able to make payments if you save your home. Is there equity? Can you sell it market value? Can you sell it short. Can you rent it out? Do you view it as an asset or as a liability? How much stress will be removed from your life if you eliminate it? How much value does it add to your life if you keep it?
Remember....it's just a house, stay positive, there's always options!
