I own a lot in Desert Hot Springs CA. I just got a notice from the city that code enforcement wants the rubbish cleared under certain conditions--nothing but the rubbish. How do I find someone to do this for me?
I saw this lot about 3 years ago, and it was okay then, but ... I don't know anybody there or around there. No phone bood, no one to make sure the job is done. Going there is probably doable, but would be difficult. I have 30 days.

What can I do? How do I do it? Anybody here, there?

I do have the address of a neighboring lot, how do I find out who owns it? What is showing in the white pages reverse lookup gives me a disconnected phone number.

How can I find out the names of the neighbors to contact them to see about overseeing the work, or at least telling me if it's done?
This is Riverside County

Interesting: I did get some info last night and edited the above post to reflect that--it didn't go through.
I did use the yellow pages and found a list of handymen and yard service people that do yard cleanup, a couple will give a free estimate.
I have a neighbor's address, but their phone is disconnected--no way to reach them.

Re-reading this letter, I am liable for all costs, which will be recorded as a lien. I can object within 30 days. If I do not request a hearing, the county will abate the problem and charge me. Monday I'll call them to try to get a better understanding. The last line of the letter says "you are encouraged to immediately contact code enforcement to discuss resolution."
So I will. What kinds of questions should I be asking?
Maybe I can hire a co on my own and do this--probably somewhat cheaper then the county doing it.

Whoever you hire, have them take a before picture and email it to you. Then have them take an 'after' picture - and email that to you too.

The time I ran into a situation like this, the city was going to charge me over $300 to mow the yard and clean up the clipping. Much cheaper to do it on your own.

Do you know anyone in this area who could drive by and check it out? It doesn't have to be someone who's next door, just someone who could drive by.

Did you buy the property from a Realtor? If you did maybe you could get them to drive by it and take some pictures for you so you can see what they are talking about.

You could also call the local hardware stores (not the big box shops) and ask them who they would recommend to do the work for you. They should know some good handymen in the area that will get the job done right for you with minimal cost.

I did, but over 20 years ago. I saw it once since then, that was about 3 years ago. the only thing there was small stuff and we did dispose of it. I can't help wondering if when the folks next door left, if they didn't toss their stuff over the fence...This is the only notice in 25 years...

Good idea--I will get their numbers. and call them too.

That's kind of what I'm afraid of. It's a long day's drive there, if I can do it in a day.
No, I don't know anyone there at all. I've posted that question on several of the fora I use, hoping someone is there, or knows someone near there.
No response yet. I will ask the hardware store about someone to take several digital photos too, of before and after.
oh, I'm considering selling it, too, if anyone's interested...Probably use craigslist, zillow, and other such fora, including this one.
Thanks for those suggestions.

why did you buy a piece of desert in the first place ? if unattended , that's no wonder someone will dump **** on it sooner or later. Just move your ass over there, get some trash bags, goggles and gloves and clean up the mess. it's your property after all.

Many of the watch groups are easy to work with if you approach them in a non-adversarial manner. They are only city worker who could really care less. I would ask for clarity on the offense, then explain to them that you are an out of town owner and ask for an extension to rectify the issue. I'd also ask them for recommendations.

Notice that she did say she's never had a problem in the 25 years she owned it, did check on it three years ago, and is trying to deal with the situation.

Check the local craigslist! Code enforcement guys may have already taken a picture and could possibly email a copy of it to you.

· Tucson, Arizona

Monday Afternoon I did find a fellow who got photos today and emailed them to me 7PM . I haven't seen them yet. I finally got to talk to Code enforcement Officer about 4:30 this afternoon. There was a change in personnel, and he hasn't seen it yet. I talked to a couple of RE agents, and one gave me the name of their yard service, and she will go look at it Wed AM.
The Code man was pleased to hear that. He said there are 4 common reasons that such reports get generated--and I was one of 36 in the neighborhood that got one this time. House hold trash blown in, desert rubbish/green waste (tumbleweeds, etc) blown in, dumped household goods, dumped construction stuff. He said that with the repos, people are destroying and dumping the stuff whereever... He doesn't have photos yet, doesn't know what's there.
I'll call a couple of churches to see if they can suggest someone honorable to keep an eye on it. Maybe one of the clean up people can get me the name and number of a neighbor to contact.

Tomorrow I should have two estimates, and can get it cleaned up immediately. Code guy said he hopes when he does go to see it, that it will be cleaned up.
Thank you all for your support.

Trust but verify...
The photos don't tell me a lot. Mario said there's "junk trash, from furniture to construction material. Their is a very dangerous bee hive that will cause a lot of problem . I estimated to remove just the junk on the premised without bushing. In any green shrubs or weeds at $650 that includes only trash, like furniture, construction material. This estimate does not include the removal of the bee hive. I would charge $1,340 to remove of the all the bee hive, furniture, construction material and clear all over grown shrubs and weeds and haul away all. Their is about 2 1/2 trash loads of junked trash it would take me a whole day to clear it out with me and my laborers"

Mario called today to tell me the hive is 5 feet tall and about 4 ft wide. I told him I'd let him know if I will hire him to do the work (total $1,340 to remove of the all the bee hive, furniture, construction material and clear all over grown shrubs and weeds and haul away all. Their is about 2 1/2 trash loads of junked trash it would take me a whole day to clear it out with me and my laborers--$650 for bee removal))

We hung up and the phone rang. It was Sam from the bee removal co. He said the hive is about the size of two basketballs about 2 feet high and a foot in diameter, and it should be removed. He's removing it now, $185, to kill the bees and destroy the hive. It occurs to me now that I should have had him give the hive to someone. Too late.
So I guess Mario will not get the job. I hope I can find someone else.
