I asked this on our BiggerPockets Facebook page and have been getting some troubling responses. I thought it important to take it home to the forums to get all of your feedback. So . . .

How many real estate "guru" emails do you get per week?
(please include emails from affiliates of gurus as well)

I am guessing I get 5-10 per week. I try to unsubscribe for stuff as much as possible, but it is difficult to do from my Blackberry on the road.

I bet I get thousands of pieces of junk mail each week to go with them!

Once you look at one of their sites and get on their mailing list - it is hard to get the hard sell tactics off of you. When I get tired of them - I junk the emails. 10-15/day for me - then the phone calls - "you have been selected for our mentoring program - please send in $10K and we will teach you everything you ever wanted to know about real estate. Rich Dad - about $8-9K program, Donald Trump - about $8-9K program, local real estate investing group from Colo Spgs, CO a subchapter of Bill Bronchick from Denver - only $24K for a 2-year program. Attended a few meetings and all they talked about was the head cheese catching an arrow blindfolded on a TV show. When I attend a local real estate investors group - I expect to hear about real estate.

I have had 11 in the past 24 hours.

Of course I opted in to get a tip for free, then I never unsubscribe. I have learned some things from their emails though. I mean besides how to be a good hypnotic copywriter.

Property Manager · Chandler, Arizona

Too Damn Many, Yes I admit like the others that I clicked on something and neglected to unsubscribe but wow, I sometimes get 3 or more from the same guru in the same day. That's no longer marketing... that's spam!

Real Estate Investor · Audubon, Pennsylvania

Too damn many is the right answer - luckily my spam filter serves me welll in catching them so I don't have to experience the dread of resding each of them.

But even worse is the fact that the other forms of spam (unsolicited ads for watches, male enlargement, pharmaceuticals, etc) show a marked increase after any time I have "subscribed" to some pitchman's new "offering". Spam filter to the rescue on these too.

Any more thoughts on this one? I'm surprised that more people haven't chimed in.

Hey Joshua,

I get a ton, but I recognize that it is my fault for opting in. I guess you put up with a lot of pitches & hype for the occasional nugget of wisdom that you glean. Just gotta wear the thigh-high boots, as it can get pretty deep :)

I don't count all of the emails but there must be 15+ every week. Some sites seem to generate considerably more than others.

95% of the time, when I give up my email address in exchange for "information" or something free", it is a BIG red flag for me to expect my address to be spammed forever by the advertiser & whomever he shares my address with. I don't want that crap in my inbox that might make me miss seeing something important.

So, I ALWAYS use a throw-away email address for that stuff and if I never check that email address again for life, so be it.

Of course, I used to give my "primary" email address as they commonly ask for, but when it started to get crazy, I put a halt to it. It amazes me how marketers believe that's the smartest way to market. Because it is impossible for any stranger to have anything HELPFUL to say to me every freakin day.

I just checked one of my throw-away addresses set up just for real estate and it looks like about 10-15/day come in. Larry Goins sent 4 emails on April 19. Unbelievable.

When someone sends too many emails, whatever little trust I once had is considerably diminished - and that's putting it mildly.

Real Estate Investor · Southern, California

Ulgghh,
I get so many its disgusting! I have my emails come into outlook and set a rule to automatically filter them out. That said, any given day, I get about 12-17 solicitations!!! Many of them are from different ones, but the same stuff. Disgusting!

Ahhh, so THAT's the key skill I've been lacking all this time!

As to the question, I rarely get any. Probably because I haven't signed up with a bunch of web sites for their crap. The last time I did, a long time ago, it was with one of Peter Conti's web sites. Fortunately, I used a disposable e-mail address. Sure enough, after a couple of weeks, I started getting spam to that address, so I deleted it.

OTOH, I probably get pitched something about 2-3 times a month on Facebook. I find this almost unavoidable as I maintain a network with several real estate investors and professionals on the site.

So those of us that dont like the emails should NEVER send an email out to anyone who hasnt asked for it. And then for those who have asked us to send them stuff we should look in our crystal ball for advice on the remaining to determine who was really just wanting the free gifts...

We get pitched with everything we do... Its life

I get my fair share but mostly because I opted - in. What's interesting is that I opt-in for 1 particular REI system or product and the GURU tends to use that email for ALL of the products they offer. I'm pretty sure they share my e-mail address with their GURU friends because I miracously get an email for some product that I know I didnt opt-in for.

Pitching a product is fine, but to relentlessly send email with constant, repetitive marketing (typically about the same product) on a daily basis is abusive.

This process used to work fine. I give up my email address in return for a product pitch, but not for email abuse. Lately, marketers' greed is overwhelming their sense of reason and rationality.

Real Estate Investor · Bakersfield, California

To be fair... The whole internet thing is about marketing something... Heck this site has this in their terms of use

By providing us with your email address through registration or our opt-in list, you consent to our use of the email address to send you periodic service-related notices, including those required by law. You may not opt out of these service-related e-mails. We do reserve the right to use your email address to send you other messages, including feature updates, auto-generated emails from various portions of the site (which you can opt-out of from your dashboard), periodic newsletters, and other opportunities. If you do not want to receive these email messages, you can opt out by emailing webmaster@biggerpockets.com.

Kinda says it all.

On another board you can bot it for some 50,000 email addresses for 75 bucks...

Excessive marketing should kill the marketer however they wouldnt do it unless it worked...

And who markets using email anymore... Cell phones are the next best thing since sliced bread.

I can send a message to 1000 cell phone at the click of my mouse and know that they received the message instantly...

Actually, I think the real gurus have black-balled me! But there are some members that spam me about how to do options, I think the seller finance guy gave up trying to get me to order anything. They go to my spam which is emptied in bulk. So, about 5 a week I guess.

Wholesaler · Scottsdale, Arizona

I get about 10 emails a day from 6 different people. From: Cam Dunlap, Zack Childress, JP Vaughn, Tom Kish, and a whole bunch of others they all they a secret proven system that will make me a boat load of money...yeah right
