I went to a local real estate investor club tonight in my neighborhood. Very nice, enthusiastic people who came to learn and to share. What has been the experience of the group in spending time with these groups? What positive outcomes have people received? Is the investment of time been worthwhile?

Wholesaler · Dallas, Texas

These contacts are well worth the time. You can meet future sellers and buyers. Need a contractor, just ask someone there.

I agree with Chris. We have been struggeling to get a good REI club off of the ground here in Little Rock for the past few years. The group is still small. But, I consider the contacts and education valuable. If you are just starting out, this is a good place to spend some time.

I think they're worth the time. Most of the established ones should have a good handle on the local market. Laws and policies that affect the local market.

Ability to find what you need in services. Network with others, find out what they're doing, what's working, whats not etc...

I haven't been to our local REIA in some time but I plan on going back to take advantage of the pro's while dealing with the few con's that come with it.

AZREIA has one the best run clubs (that is what they tell me), but I do not attend anymore. They do have a good market data, but it is now available on their website so I just download it. Lots of new people looking for help and getting started and lots of vendors selling services. I have taken a lot of their beginning classes (fix and flip, short sales, etc), that provide good foundations. I do take advantage of their 2% rebates at Home Depot, and I have hired quite a few contractors off their website.

So in short, I'm a yearly member but do not attend the meetings.

I am a big supporter of AZREIA and belong to some independent local RE groups. I have been able to capitalize on my time spent at meetings and believe it is well worth the investment.

If you choose the right clubs, then yes, they are well worth it. Some are just pitch fests for gurus, but others have real info shared and teh networking with other investors is what makes it more than worth your time. I also gain exposure by speaking and attending clubs which is also important in building a reputation and building your network which is also called your "Networth"

What you get out of these Joel, really depends on your goals. My wife and I go to meet potential borrowers and have built a nice side business as a result. In another club, we "argue" at a roundtable about real estate and the economy. Others go to find buyers for their wholesale deals. For some, it's a social event. Etc.

After you go to a few, you gravitate to those that meet your goals and to where you're most comfortable.

I have to agree with Will on this. Ihave attended a few clubs, but most of the time, someone is trying to sell you something. Every once in awhile, you have a valuable experience. I'm not currently attending any. Rich

Hey Joel i am familiar with your business model and i have been active sponsor at some of the local organizations for a few years. It is a marathon sport and i often question whether its worth the time but i can honestly say we have cultivated some really great relationships over the years. I try to develop 1 quality contact per meeting rather than just trade business cards with the room. Good luck.

Wholesaler · Dallas, TX

Most of the events that I've attended included a sales pitch from an annoying RE Guru. With that said, I am a sponsor of one of our clubs and I attend as many meetings as possible to network with other RE Pro's. I typically leave once the sales pitch starts...

Rehabber · Riverside, California

Every club is built different. There are some really awesome clubs in Socal and more appear to be popping up. The small ones tend to be more intimate (duh). Depends on who you click with. I know plenty of people who have found investor-minded Realtors, contractors, and even partners at clubs. Great networking opportunity and motivates you to get moving.

Rehabber · Riverside, California

PS I've met people from Bigger Pockets offline as well. This is a pretty awesome online club.

Great point! I have as well and many of the BP members also attend the same offline RE clubs with me. BP is definately the best "club" around and the beauty is, you can visit anytime, any hour, from anywhere in the world!

I know this is going to sound irrational but I avoided going to these when I was brand new because I thought someone might try to take advantage of me either through an expensive course I didn't need or with a junk property they wanted to unload. Then later I had a scheduling conflict on the night the meetings are held in this area so I was unable to go. I've still never been to one of these live groups.

Well, now that you have BP Nation as a mentor partner, fear not and go Bienes!

There is only one club in Austin worth attending. The others are a waste of time IMO.

Real Estate Investor · Bellingham, Washington

The club I am a member of in Bellingham is made of local businesses and Realtors. They provide valuable educational lecture by guest speakers on interesting topics. Most of them have deals to sell and not interested in what I am promoting. I still enjoy attending and the networking may payoff i the future. They are powerful group in the area.
