My ex girlfriend got married last May 5 and everything between us were done.. I was badly hurt... I promised a total changed so then, from that day...

1. I stopped smoking (smoking since 1996)
2. I go to gym for 3 times a week (never done before)

Do you think this is a good idea?... it's been hard to quit smoking during the firt 5 days but it's getting better now.. I just drink plenty of water when I want to smoke...its working.

Congratulations! Every morning you wake up smoke free; give yourself a pat on the back. It definitely gets easier. There will be times it can be trying, and try to anticipate those situations before they happen. Limit your time around smokers and if you drink--be careful. You will really want one then.

Quitting smoking will most likely be the number one thing you do to improve your overall health. I smoked for about 5 years, and I thank God I quit. That was about 20 years ago.

The first days are the hardest . There will come a day when you won't even think, " I didn't smoke today" .

Way to go!

Kudos to you my friend! Let alone the obvious health benefits there are other benefits.

1. Think about the money you will save. I would wager that over the course of a year the money spent on cigs would have made you have to do a extra deal just to cover it.

2. More people will be able to work with you. What am I saying? Well, go to a networking event, you never have to go outside to grab a smoke and can keep networking and actually close the deals.

3. I also know of many people that don't like to date smokers or kiss smokers, so now many a new arena for potential new girlfiends will open to you!

Again, congrats!

:woohoo:

When I divorced my ex wife I went through a similar experience. I got on a health kick for a while. It's a good thing. I was topping out at 315 lbs. at the height of the " pain" . I got down to 260 (healthy for me - I'm a very big guy) then regulated at about 250-260.

For me it was all a mental thing. I looked at myself in the mirror and determined I was no longer a 300+ lb. person. One thing that was a huge help was I took post it notes and wrote down my daily progress and stuck it to the mirror. In my case I wrote down my daily weight and saw it as it dropped. My suggestion would be to write down " 7 days smoke free" , " 8 days smoke free" , etc.... and see the visual evidence of your progress every day when you look in the mirror. It helps a lot.

I just want to say again how important your physical health is, and I commend you for making the changes. The key is to make a life change and make it permanent. To many people will go on a " Diet" then revert back to what they think is normal and the weight comes flying back on and they are worse of than they were before.

My REI Club actually had a " Get Fit" challenge that we did over 6 months. Challenged 10 members to willingly stand on a scale at the front of the room each month at our main meeting. One member lost 8% of is starting weight. I think that was awesome, considering it wasn't like he was on a ranch with a professional trainer like they have on the Biggest Loser show.

I know others that lost just shy of 2% and had the 9th best out of 10 in that contest.... Guess they felt that losing 1 pound a month was good for them.

Either way, it is interesting to note how people view Smokers v Non-Smokers as well as Thin/Fat people. I read an article on that in a local paper today and found it got me thinking...

Good for you. I work out vigorously after every break-up. It got to the point that it became a habit. Now I do resistance training 4-5 days a week and either power walk or run 4 days a week. It helps me relieve the stress of the day.

That is awesome that your quitting smoking. I have many friends that try and succeed in quitting. It took them awhile to be accustom to it but it can be done.

There are some great commercials currently playing in my area about RE-LEARNING to do daily routine activities without smoking. For instance, learning to drive without smoking in your car. This obviously doesn't help the person quitting cold turkey, but can be very useful for those trying to quit " the habit" of smoking.

I never smoked more than a few a day, but getting rid of the routine (i.e. not smoking in my car) followed by cold turkey after I had quit smoking in certain situations worked for me.

By the way, I'm twice the basketball player I used to be since I can now breathe the way I'm supposed to again!

CONGRATULATIONS!

You turned something painful (the break-up) into something very good...a determination to quit smoking! Quitting smoking is like losing weight, it is easy to talk about, but not so easy to do and requires a lot of will and determination.

In fact, quitting smoking may be more difficult in many ways since its is not only a HABIT but also an addiction. Your health will improve significantly, and so will your outlook on life despite the hurt in the past!

Being GOOD to yourself is the best thing you can do when life throws you a curve ball... and that is just what you have done. Good for you!! Bravo!

Merriadoc, I don't hate smokers. Heck, for all I care, you are welcome to smoke faster and die sooner. It's your lungs and your life.

However, I don't allow smokers in my rentals because they damage my buildings, stink everything up, and leave the walls filthy with nicotine and burns in the carpets. But you are certainly very welcome to smoke in your own house.

I don't want smoke in my own lungs. So as long as you can keep your smoke in your own body and not fill the air up with it, so I have to smoke it whether I want it or not, smoke away. I've got a right to fly on an airplane or eat in a restaurant without taking in your tobacco smoke.

I hate seeing all the filthy cigarette butts all over the ground. If you will keep your butts picked up and don't litter, I could care less if you smoke.

Every year, we get multiple fires started by smokers tossing lit cigarettes out of their car window. I'd love to see DNA done on the butts and the smiker responsible billed for the entire cost-- which sometimes runs into multi-million dollars. But as long as you don't toss your butts out in public and are willing to pay for any damage you do, I don't have any problem with your smokiing.

In fact, it's very nice of smokers to pay millions of dollars in cigarette taxes. That's money to run the government that doesn't come out of my pocket. Thank you.

With apologies, though. I don't want to sit next to you on the bus, because, quite honestly, you stink, your clothes stink, and your breath stinks.

It's great that you quit! A lot of people have difficulty doing it. In NYC, cigarettes are 10 bucks a pack. My friends complain but keep smoking. Be proud of yourself.. :superman:

We never know where motivation will come from. It is a personal thing to each person. What matters is that the actions are honorable, the cause just and the results beneficial.
