The hotel manager won't let us leave until we settle the hotel bills. You can speak with him through this number +447024078842 his name is Larry.am so  freaked out at the moment
You can wire the money to me through western-union all you need is name on my passport and location below.\

I guess his email account is hacked and this mail is sent to all his contacts. Please dont send any money to this address.
Thank you.

-Uwe

p.s.: I archive this mail for police investigations.

Thanks for the alert. I haven't seen the email.

Real Estate Investor · Wheat Ridge, Colorado

Most likely this is simply a spammer who has picked up this member's e-mail address from some other source and is using it as the "from" field in the e-mails. Forging e-mail headers is trivial.

Its possible its a virus on his machine or perhaps his mail server that's using the addresses.

That's a good reminder to ALWAYS be careful with e-mails, even if they appear to be from a trusted source. I've had several today that appear to be shipment notifications from Amazon, but all the links take you to who knows where.

I received the Amazon e-mail as well today.

Seems like a classic Nigerian fraud.

I guess someone who wires money based on such an email probably deserves to lose it.

Real Estate Investor · Chemnitz, Saxonia

Guys here is a little bit different, scammer used the real name of the BP member (I shortened his name above) and I guess he send these mails only to registered addresses in address book from BP members account.
So I guess this account is hacked not only a spam type.

I mean email account, not BP account!!

BiggerPockets Founder · Denver, Colorado

I've gotten one of these before...months back. They have nothing to do with BP - just happened that a member with your email probably got the email hacked

A guy I listen to on the radio was talking last week about the exact same thing. He even went as far as to call the hotel that was listed in the email. He was worried due to the email was addressed by a friend.

Real Estate Investor · Northeast TN, Tennessee

I DID receive the same email, as I'm on the member's email list. Found out from him later that his gmail account was hacked, so this is not just a spammer at work. The hackers changed his pw, and now he has no access to his email and/or his contacts in order to let them know what's going on.

BiggerPockets Founder · Denver, Colorado

BTW - When I got the email, it came from a family member who was traveling at the time to a country that was mentioned in the email. It was VERY convincing to me, but of course I verified with them by email before doing ANYTHING. With that in mind, the lesson here is that you should ALWAYS verify any information you get by email, even from people you already know.

It is how we learn, don´t use easy passwords for any important online accounts!!!!!

Best is like that: XcV6Qkz8,jJ6.

yes include comma or dot (if provided) and numbers, use of capital and small initial letters

-Uwe

Real Estate Investor · Phoenix, Arizona

Uwe, how would you remember a password like that? I think if you make your password very complex, you will probably write it down somewhere to make it easy to recall it. That will make it less secure.

I think it is best to create a password that is not a real word or phrase - something that you created and can pronounce. It is hard to crack such unique "words" and as long as you have antivirus and anti-spyware programs running, you should be safe.

Real Estate Investor · Chemnitz, Saxonia

Vikram,
yes its not easy to remember but you can write this down on paper. I use four of this passwords, at begin hard now I memorised all.

Online account hack is also only possible when accounts not protected with up to five tries or so. After sixth wrong try account should be locked and user automatical informed.

Vikram,
Here's a "how to" that is often suggested for deriving those seeming random combinations for a password. Think of a phrase that is of note to you. Select the first or last letter of each word in that phrase, and go in order. You can alternate upper case vs lower case if you choose, or just upper case first or last letter. Add in some numeral and a punctuation symbol - and you satisfy the password cracking difficulty while still being memorable.

Josh,

That might not be as prudent as it sounds due to what is posted in this quote:

Obviously, the hacked email account is now in full control of the hackers, so an email verification is something they are HOPING will be done so that they can lure in the unsuspecting to complete the scam.

It's a cold, cruel world out there - you always have to be vigilant, and even then you can still fall victim.

Real Estate Investor · Audubon, Pennsylvania

I have a pretty good guess as to the identity of the BP member whose email was hacked here. I have to say it's very disappointing that this person has not himself posted on the forums warning his network colleagues about this matter.

Uwe - your thoughtfulness is what every person here should aspire to.

Real Estate Investor · Chemnitz, Saxonia

Thanks Steve, first time after receiving I would only delete this email but I thought no you must inform all others it´s better.

Member from BP is inactive since three month so I guess he has not think about that.

This can be dangerous, if you mean you're using the same four passwords for a variety of uses. While they may be very strong passwords, you never know what a site does with them. I always assume any site or application may be storing those passwords in the clear, writing them into log file, or even keeping them in memory in the clear. Well designed applications will not do any of those things. But the apps don't trust me and I don't trust them. Better to have distinct passwords for every site you use.

Small_flying-phoenixJon Holdman, Flying Phoenix LLC

BiggerPockets Founder · Denver, Colorado

Jon is right. You can never trust what a site will do with your PW. We encrypt all passwords and don't have any way of recovering them other than to re-generate a new one if someone loses it. That said, I've seen some sites send unencrypted PW's over APIs, and all sorts of other scary practices. Be careful out there!

No, no I use more than four Passwords, but I use four complicated passwords for high sensitive accounts. One pw for each account, so John is right more then one passwords is very important.
