I'm just curious to see what motivates the people here to invest and to keep learning new things. I'm sure there will be lots of different reasons. My main motivation is, of course, money, but money that brings power and respect. I'm tired of being treated like a dumb kid, i want to get out there and do things...and impress people, too. I'm also motivated by how much free time I could be having and how many cool gadgets I could have. I'm sure a lot of people feel the same way, but is this enough to be inspired for the whole nine yards, or is it too shallow of a reason?
can't wait to hear what you guys have to say!

I do it for my children.

Although, they have no idea that I even own rentals. I don't discuss it with them. Although, I do discuss frugality, personal economics, and how a hard day's work can be rewarding. As far as they know, I'm just an Instrument Technician at a paper mill (which I enjoy keeping my time occupied with).

When they are older, I'll let them in on the secret. But, only after I feel that they are mature enough to take part in the legacy I am trying to build for them.

So, even though I do this for them.....They will never know the "spoiled life".

So I guess you could say I do it out of love. Corny, but true.

As for my personal wants. I have some, too. I don't want a fancy car, although I do enjoy hotrodding (build them myself....and then sell them for a profit.....but drive an 8 year-old Neon as a daily, great on gas, cheap to work on). I don't want a fancy house. We live in a working class neighborhood. I do like to take a "nice" vacation, once a year. Typically, we drive and go see family. I have never taken out a loan for a vacation (no credit cards for that matter either......credit is a horrible device and a crutch of the impatient).

I guess you could say that I do what I do for financial security. Both for me, my wife, and my children.

I love the hunt.. And of course hoping to be able to get out of this cube and work for myself full time.

I do this because I enjoy the work. And you must understand that succeeding in REI is really very hard work. It's a job, and like any other job, if you don't enjoy doing it then you won't do it well.

I like the independence of being self-employed. Not everyone can 'do' self-employed because it involves wearing so many hats, and wearing them well.

Guy I know is a mechanic. All week long he works for a dealership. Then at night and on weekends he works on his own projects. For him, every day is a Saturday 'cause he gets to do what he enjoys.

My motivation in selling houses is the fact that I was able to help other people to get into their own home and aside from that I earn from that.

I am naturally motivated, and enjoy motivating others to take action as well as instruct and educate them on how to take action.

To achieve complete financial freedom, travel the world.. and send my children to the best schools.

· Ft. Worth, Texas

I want to be able to retire by the time my kids are in school. (Not that I necessarily will retire, I just want to be able to.) I want to be a part of their school activities, and have a lifestyle that allows me to pursue my own interests without having to worry about earning a paycheck.

Real Estate Investor · Ohio

My motivation in running my rental property business is to:

1) Make enough money to support my lifestyle
2) Be semi-retired by only needing to work 3-4 days a week.
3) Build up net worth for "retirement", in case I ever decide that I don't want to work any more (I doubt that will ever happen).

This week is a good example of what I've worked so hard to build. I worked Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and then went camping Thursday through Sunday. Being able to do what I want and having the freedom to do it when I want to do it is very important to me.

I'd have to say travel, and financial freedom. 2 years ago i traveled to europe for 2 weeks, and it was the most amazing experince of my life, it made for a huge jump in motivation, because i want to be able to go and see the world whenever i want.
I'd also like to be totally financially free, not being help back by money, maybe i sound greedy, but I want that mercedes in my garage and a large amount of assets.

I believe truely successful investors are self-driven from somewhere deep inside themselves. Wanting to invest in R.E. to aquire things is a risky business. Inherantly R.E. is a business of feast or famine filled with many distractions. Often I've seen young investors close a couple of deals sometimes quickly but, what comes with that is instant gratification. Suddenly one finds themselves in a position to get those new gadgets & finance that expesive car/house.

Then whoshed away by there newfound feeling of accomplishment & achievement the next deal falls apart and the one after that. Buyers are liers and change there minds (many do not know what they really even want). Sellers see you pull up in your fancy car and think who's this kid born with a silver spoon in there mouth.

In the mean time whats happening to your investment. Tenents tear everything up & want you to fix it. Excuses for why they can't pay rent never cease.

You can not buy respect only envy.

I'm not trying to discourage you. I want you to be prepared for what your about to get yourself into. R.E. is stressfull the highs and lows of one day thinking your getting a check for tens of thousands to ten min. later no chance of anything untill you put another deal together. Bills for all those gadgets/house/car keep coming.

My advice is take a close personal inventory of yourself. What really makes you happy? Are you good with people? Are you a good listener? Do you mind people saying how did you get my number and hanging up on you before you have a chance to say anything. Are you good at presentations? Do you have a problem speaking in front of small groups ie. the buyers and seller entire extended family may show up.

All the unplesent things aside helping someone else realize there dreams of owning thier own home is very rewarding (I've seen a few happy tears).

Bottom line do not invest in R.E. INVEST IN RELATIONSHIPS! Go to your local realestate investment association talk to seasoned investors ask them how they got started. Network with everyone in your community involved appraisers, realtors, inspectors, contractors ect. Build a strong sphere of influence & cultivate it over time. Oppertunities will present themselves.

Just my 2 cents

Good luck Jamie

hmm.. my motivation is to be able to surf, whenever i want, where ever i want. I know that sounds a little immature, but it is what i truly love to do. apart from that.. financial freedom.. it'd be nice to be finished with that phase of life.. but really its just to surf. lol .. dont get me wrong though.. i love REI... i'm definitely not in it only for the money.. i'm sure i'll always have that urge for wanting to invest in property... it kinda just becomes ingrained in you.

What is my motivation? What is my major, definite purpose? What kind of person do I want to become in this life? After all of this contemplation, a few answers surface that might help you out on the road to living a fulfilled and purposeful life. Most people never bother to write down their goals. Many will write out a New Year's resolution and a few might even keep those resolutions. Goals are a whole different story.Do you struggle with motivation? You know you want to accomplish goals in various areas of your life, but when it comes to doing them, your motivation wanes. Sound familiar? If so, you need to change something in your thinking.
