For a while I've been studying the use of social networks for the purpose of marketing, and realized that many people are just doing it wrong.

You can't just build a profile and expect to get any benefit from it at all. You need to work hard, participate in the community, interact, and get out there. The problem is that there isn't enough time in the day to do it on dozens of sites, as many experts recommend you do.

What is the answer then?

This article on the BiggerPockets examines that question and gives what I think is the best answer....

Facebook of late is like one big popup ad. It is social networking not social sales.....

Yes - my sentiments exactly! That is why we're so hard-core here about ads, spam, etc.

Nice article Josh. I absolutely agree. I have done that mistake when i just started networking online. I went and subscribed on every website i found and couldn't find any time to participate in any of them or even follow up on my personal questions because i couldn't remember where i posted it.

Now, I focus only on BP that has a lot of info and facebook.

No need to create various accounts. With a single account you can well connect to each other and get benefits.

Good article Josh. You bring up many good points on why limiting the number of social sites you participate in is a good thing.

On the other hand, I don't think that putting yourself out there to as many people as possible is a bad thing. I don't personally prefer either method, but I think that creating a profile that sticks out on every relevant site possible would give you an edge over those who only can be found on a few sites.

Why not give your purpose more exposure? For those who care, it shouldn't take long to create a pretty good profile. Just change it up a little on each site and be prepared to handle a lot more traffic. IMO you should pray for more traffic so you could hire a few noobs to handle your mail.

Jesse -
Do you think that by just creating a profile somewhere, you're going to 1) get traffic 2) build your network and/or get traffic for your site? I don't think you'll get any of the above unless you become an active participant.

Anyone else?

I think if you create something flashy enough that it makes it very possible. Then once they click that link to get to your website, it's all up to your content to keep them.

It's like seeing that really pretty girl sitting across you at bar. You really want to approach and learn more about her, yet you know nothing about her other than that she looks pretty hot from a distance. The dealbreaker could turn out to be that once you finally meet her, well um.....she turns out to be a man.

Sounds great in theory. In practice, you're competing against too many other people who are actually active on those communities and are present. It is hard to compete against that if you're not really there.

Great example Jessee of what Josh is talking about. Exposure for exposure's sake can get you into a realtionship that you do not want to be in.

All relationship's need to be nutured to be effective for you. And a profile is like the beginning of a relationship.

Imagine what her ummmm his profile would look like if he/she did not take care of it! Would you even look twice?

Lol! Good point fellas. The thing is, all you need is some good looking profiles to get lured into their websites. It doesn't take much to update a profile every now and then.

When i googled re forums into google, this site popped up somewhere along the lines. The thing that initially caught my eyes was that it looked spiffy and seemed pretty user friendly.
It wasn't until I started using the site on a regular basis that I found out that there was a lot to be learned here. The members along with the creator had something useful to say.
It turns out that the site was not only spiffy looking and user friendly, but its regular members usually don't mind to guide you and coach you on to the right path without charging you a 4,995.00 "guru" fee.

So technically it was the appearance that got me interested in this site initially and stopped me from looking into the next best forum on google.

Am I hearing you correctly?

It does not matter if you are two-faced, or twenty-faced, as long as the ends justify the means?

Rehabber · El Paso, Texas

I'm not sure where you're getting that from, but no that's not my point.
My point is that at the end of the day exposure is not a bad thing. I don't think putting yourself out there and promoting your cause ethically and legally is and should ever be a problem.
If you ever get to the point where you're overextending yourself, that should be considered a good thing. People are responding to you and you're cause. At that point you should probably think about hiring some help.

Real Estate Investor · ten mile, Tennessee

Jesse, I am just having a little fun by putting the profile thing into different terms. It is ok that we agree on the many profile's point. There is no wrong or right really with this just opinions.

The two-faced or twenty-faced thing would be like having two profiles or twenty profiles. Anyone doing this I would suggest having the SAME profile on all the different social networks that they use, that way you do look a lot more like yourself instead of possibly three or four different people.

I do realize that sometimes your "profile" is taken and you might have to change it a little in order to network on one or more sites.

Overextending yourself almost always leads to the economic downturns like we have today. It starts off as a good thing, but it can not be sustained and I think that is the problem that Josh is alluding to as hurting you in the end.

BiggerPockets Founder · Denver, Colorado

What I'm saying is that just having a dormant profile isn't going to do anything positive for you. The entire point of SOCIAL NETWORKING is to be social. If you're not being social, you might as well not exist.

Can't say I disagree with you there.
Let's agree to disagree on the overextending yourself factor.

You're right about having a dormant profile Josh.
What I was trying to get at was........ if it ever comes to the point were you're having trouble responding to all your questions or keeping up with your workload, then great. It means you have people interested in you and whatever you have to say. Most people on here have hopes of expanding and growing their business.

BiggerPockets Founder · Denver, Colorado

Having the hope of expanding your business won't translate into actually expanding your business if your attention is spread too thin. That is why I recommend sticking to a handful of places and focusing your energies.

I think it is not good to make multiple profiles.
[STATEMENTS ENDORSING BAD BEHAVIOR ONLINE IS NOT WELCOME - POST EDITED]

I agree with Josh. It's best not to spread yourself too thin - better to be part of and participate in a few networks getting to know people instead of just having a dormant profile in a lot of networks not knowing anyone. Yes, I do think that's why it's called "social networking." :D

· Bailey, Colorado

Yes, I agree signing up on different social marketing and build profile doesn't end there, you must really communicate with the people inside that community to be able to get great more attention and notice your site or whatever you are trying to market on internet. By doing that so, try to someone who the job for you who are better in SEO.
