The use of Self Directed IRA's and the advantages of not having to pay taxes on the returns that are available in real estate and private lending, using these, are subjects that we all should be talking about more here. It's not hard to find folks that have lost a lot of money in retirement accounts these days!

The solo 401k plan is the SEP IRA rival with better options such as the borrowing provisions and the increased amounts you can contribute.
