No Go at the Real Estate Expo

by Joshua Dorkin on March 6, 2006

Most of you know how I feel about the Trump Real Estate Expo (Part 1 | Part 2). Today, I recieved an email from their Director of Online Marketing, who was offering sites like ours a 50% commission for referring invitees to the event.

If the Learning Annex would offer true classes at the expo, and stop using the event as a marketing tool for all of the Real Estate Know-It-Alls, I’d be happy to help out.

That said, we’ll forego the commission, and instead recommend our people spend their money on a membership at their local REI Club.

’nuff said.

I totally agree with you. The Real Estate Expo is merely a glorified marketing event for the biggest wealth brands in the country. And chances are, they will all be trying to sell their courses, mentor programs and bootcamps. The sad thing about it is a lot of people will be buying their products with little success.

In my opinion, Donald Trump is probably the worst person to take advice from when getting started in real estate investing. This is because his niche is luxury commercial buildings. Has Mr. Trump ever bought a property for less than $300,000?

There needs to be more focus on learning your local market from local experts rather than national speakers who would never understand your local market.

Went to Trump last year where my company paid five grand for a 12′ x 12′ foot floor booth. Outrageous. Complete hype from Trump himself. He would only talk about any thing real estate related when directly asked and then he would immediately segue into his newest clothing line addition, or who he used to bang when blah blah area in manhattan used to be hot. God the guy just went on and on about how bigtime he is. Not all the speakers were bad, but most were either upselling their courses or upselling the guy across the rooms courses.
I agree that any local REI club meeting would be better to spend the $$$ on.
