Hi there,

I recently decided on renting an appartment with the help of a broker.I paid the broker his fees by check along with 1 months deposit in advance. The broker had asked me to make these checks out in his name even though he worked for a company.

Now, when we are about to sign the lease the landlord called me and said that the check the broker gave him bounced/failed and the broker is making excuses and not giving him the money. I keep calling the broker and he is making a new excuse every day while the landlord is threatening to give the apartment to someone else if we don't pay up. Please please help---my money is stuck with this broker. What ACTION CAN I TAKE ??? Will going to the police help ? Do I need to get a lawyer involved ?? Please help.

Scary stuff, good warning as many people just assume the person that opens the door is the owner

Oh my goodness. I live in the United States and I've never heard of anything going on like this. Wow.

Although, I've mostly rented places from established apartment complexes. When I've looked at places owned by individual landlords, they've always met me there, or at least, I thought it was them meeting me there.

I wonder if anyone has tried to pull this on me before.

Good advice Athol, however most rental properties I've ever seen are not listed with any real estate agent. Unfortunately your advice falls a bit short under that situation.

Real Estate agents in Britian aren't licensed. In the USA just ask to see the license and take the number down before handing over money.
