Michael, yes, slum lording is a poor investment choice. It's much better to add value.

Villas -- it depends on your time and stategy -- if you have the time to be a hands on manager, it saves money and you know what's going on. If you have a lot of investments and managing them is overwhelming and leaves you little time to continue investing, then it might be best to hire a property manager.
