It’s amazing to me that the Feds didn’t go to the root of the problem instead of trying to patch it up on the consumer end of things. Does this mean that lenders can simply wash their hands? Dale

Unlike Steve, I strongly object to bureaucratic nonsense that increases my costs. If IRS audits aren't efficient enough to catch the tax evaders, then change the way they're done - instead of sneaking something through a Housing Bill, adding to the IRS mountain of paperwork and increasing costs to those of us who buy online.

FYI
There's a handy free online directory of the new housing law (HR 3221) which can be read or downloaded. Table of contents takes you right to the page of interest. Here's the website.

http://www.UsHousingMeltdown.org/2008-housing-law.asp

The merchant reporting requirement mentioned above can be found on pages 681-690. Some other highlights include the change to vacation tax status, found on pages 690-693. The property tax change pages 637 and 638. First time home buyer credit found on pages 628-637.

Pork barrel spending projects located on pages 675-676 and 680-681.

While I agree, the privacy concerns are a problem. I feel absolutely no sympathy that income is going to be reported to the IRS. Yes, there will be some additional costs at tax time. Feel free to pass those costs on to me when I purchase products.
