Pointing Nameservers, Choosing A Host

Howdy. This is the 3rd in a series of posts detailing the setup of a web based real estate investment lead generation system:

Pointing Nameservers

Once you’ve identified and purchased a domain name, the next thing you’ll want to do is point your nameservers over to your hosting account. I mess with them all the time but am really not too sure how to describe what “Nameservers” are, so let’s take a minute to google it up…

Ahh, from Wikipedia:

In computing, a name server (also spelled nameserver) consists of a program or computer server that implements a name-service protocol. It maps a human-recognizable identifier to a system-internal, often numeric, identification or addressing component.

The most prominent types of name servers in operation today are the name servers of the Domain Name System (DNS), one of the two principal name spaces of the Internet. The most important function of these DNS servers is the translation (resolution) of humanly memorable domain names and hostnames into the corresponding numeric Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, the second principle Internet name space, used to identify and locate computer systems and resources on the Internet.

To sum it up, if you want to link up your clever domain name with your hosting account, you’re going to want “point” those nameservers.

Here’s how to Point em:

  • Find out what your Nameservers are from your hosting provider. (Quickest way would be to search your host’s knowledgebase or, if you’ve got cpanel hosting they’re usually over in the left column somewhere.)
  • When managing your domain with your registrar, plug in those nameservers. It’ll look something like this:

Choosing A Host – This Real Estate Lead Generator’s Very Biased Opinion

If you don’t already have a hosting account, here’s a quick list of things to consider that I think might help you as you put together your real estate lead generation system:

  • If you’re doing anything real estate related, there are many different niches that you’ll find yourself eventually wanting to go after. As such, you might soon find yourself building a bunch of websites.
  • WordPress is the *%&^ing bomb! Period.
  • WordPress is fairly easy to install manually in about 5-10 minutes, but doing it in one click is fantastico!
  • For the beginner, CPanel Hosting with “Fantastico” installed will likely cause the least amount of headache.
  • I love Godaddy for registering domains. Don’t like them for hosting real estate wordpress sites.
  • Hostgator’s the best inexpensive hosting provider I know of. You’ll be able to hook up an unlimited number of wordpress sites and experience great support to boot.
  • Hostgator didn’t pay me to say that, I just really like them and am hoping to save some folks out there some trouble by offering the recommendation.  There are probably a number of other hosts with cpanel + fantastico that will do the trick.
