3 Strategic Ways To Keep Your New Year’s Resolution for 2010!

Did you make your New Year’s Resolution for 2010?

I hope your commited to following through on it. Why? Well, statistics show that many people tend to fade off of their new year’s resolution within the first 3 months of the new year, never reaching their goals. It’s gotten so bad that you’ll find many “experts” and “authorities” advising people not to even set a New Year’s resolution.

To be honest, I think that’s crazy talk. There would only be one thing that would make me agree with their logic and I’ll get to that a little later. What I’d like to do is talk about is 3 Ways you can dramatically increase your chances of not only meeting your new year’s resolution, but meeting any goal that you set.

So let’s begin…

1. Conditioned Progression

Conditioned Progression can be explained by simply taking on one word at a time and seeing how it applies to your life. When you think of conditioning, I want you to consider what you do on a day to day basis that you would consider a habit or routine. The conditioning of our mind is how we are able to develop habits and routines. Now this can be good or it can be bad (good habits vs. bad habits), but the point to all this is to look at how you are conditioning your mind. What are you allowing to influence the way you walk, the way you talk, the way you think, the way you act, the music you listen to, what you watch on TV…etc..

All of these external sources have the abilty to shape our personality and actions. As we do this day in and day out, it becomes second nature. Like riding a bike. You stumble or fall in the beginning and as you keep doing it over and over again…you begin to do it without much thought. Your Sub concious mind has adapted to whatever you taught it or allowed it to be subjected to. Therefore, in order to keep your New Year’s Resolution or any goal for that matter, you have to conditon your mind to do whatever it is you set out to do and it must be a consistent effort.

Now as you begin doing this you may feel strange in the beginning, but eventually you’ll get used to it. Your mind and/or body (maybe if you’re trying to lose weight) will adapt to it. I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “Practice makes Perfect.” Well I believe that saying to be very true. Anyway, as you continue down this path you’ll reach a point where you get comfortable with the direction your going or what your doing and you have the ability to do 1 of 3 things… Fall Back, Remain Constant, or Progress! Obviously, you want to progress right?

 So, in order to do that you must “step it up a notch” or push yourself outside of your “comfort zone”. It’s why people say that your comfort zone is your failure zone because you can tend to get complacent and off track. This is usually the point where people regress, procrastinate, get lazy and go back to their “old ways”. So it’s important that you continue to push yourself outside your comfort zone often in order to take your life and/or your business to the next level.

Here are a couple resources that might help with Conditioned Progression for you and your business:

2. Friends, Partnerships, and Associates

Friends and Associates can make or break your ability to reach your New Year’s Resolution. My mother used to always say, “You are who you hang with or “I dont want you hanging around so and so because they’re a bad influence.” And of course when I was younger I didn’t understand and said to myself, That My Friends don’t determine who I am, nor should I be told who too hang out with. (Notice that I said that to myself… Not my Mom. lol) However, as I got older I started realizing that she was absolutely right. When you set out to do a goal, depending on the type friends you have, they will either support your goals or blatantly reject them. The support of your friends or lack thereof can shape the decisions you make in life. Without you even fully realizing it. They could push you towards your dreams or steal your dreams within an instant.

Therefore it’s key that you pick and choose your friends wisely and if you have friends that are currently holding you back from your goals, even though they may mean well, you need to make new friends. I’m not saying dump your current friends, I’m saying make new friends. Spend time with people who are like minded and have either succeeded at what you want to do or are definitely going in the same direction. These are the people you want to partner up with. You’ll get ahead alot faster and it will greatly contribute to your conditioned progress.

3. Planning and Analyzing

It’s easy to say you’re going to go after this goal or go after that goal, but how are you going to do this? Just winging it will most always cause you to fail at whatever goal you are going after. You might get lucky, but do you really want to take that chance? You not only need to know what you want to do, but how you’re going to do it. As you make your goals, it needs to be as realistic as possible to you in order for you to achieve it. The only way to do that is by making to do lists, schedules, having mastermind meetings with your partners, friends, or associates, setting deadlines, etc. Doing this is crucial to your success.

Setting deadlines is huge if you want to condition your mind to taking small and tightly focused steps toward your goal. Now, it’s definitely easier said than done. Even people who set deadlines, tend to fade off after a while. This is most likely because they aren’t seeing the results they want to see. Maybe they’re not sure how to plan out their goals. This is when you need to reach out to your friends, partners, or associates and ask for help. Not only that, but you need to have points within your deadline (preferrably before the deadline. lol) where you can analyze what you are doing. If you’re  not making your daily, weekly or monthly goals…then what can you do in order ensure you do?

If I know I want to lose 30 pounds in one month, which is about 7 lbs a week, and I don’t achieve that goal. I need to analze what type of exercies I did, how many sets/reps, and also what I ate. Then when the next week comes I can tweak my daily, weekly, or monthly goal in order for it to be more advantageous than the previous. It’s all about progressing towards that goal.

In conclusion, I believe that conditioned progression, associating yourself with the right friends, partnerships, and associates, along with proper planning and analysis can truly help you reach your goals in 2010. It won’t be easy, but in the end you’ll feel so much better knowing that you made a declaration to the world on what you wanted to do in life and you actually achieved it. Then when the people who tried to hold you back in life will see your success and give the next person good advice, based upon your success.

So when you think about it, reaching  your goals can not only affect you, but others around you!

pps. Oh and the only way I’d agree with those who suggest not making new years resolutions is if you’re not serious and committed to reaching your goals. If you’re not serious and your not committed…the type that won’t follow through..Then what is the point of setting the goal? Think about it! Life is what you make of it!

  1. Excellent. Extraordinarily excellent.

    For myself, I have proclaimed 2010 “The Year of the Body”. Of the seven major goal/relationship areas of my life, it seems that the physical is always getting the short schrift. Oh, I give it a lick and a promise through intermittently attacking the adversity of obesity and the P.A.D. impending doom. Yet the reality is, though I quickly start to feel better, there is always something that derails me about two months into the process.

    What will be different in 2010? In 2009, I got exposed to the very excellent teachings of Marshall Sylver (who I highly recommend, currently without any vested interest). His methods have been quickly and dramatically changing my life. Through his “Turning Point” seminar, I had a portion of my subconscious mind “reprogrammed”. It’s working! I know I’ve only scratched the scratch, but for the first time in nearly 30 years, my business accounts are all up-to-date! I’ll be ready to file taxes in January! Most people would not undertstand what an absolute miracle this is for me!

    Now, I’ve made a decision to apply that same level of discipline to my exercise regimen. I learned from Marshall Sylver that in life, we’ll have one of two pains; we’ll either have the pain of discipline or the pain of regret.

    Thus, I agree with J. Lamar — not only do I intend to make bold statements about my GOALS for 2010, I intend to make big bold PLANS for how 2010 will be my best year yet. When I get on that cruise ship in February, I will weigh 15 lbs less, a major hurdle for me. It’s only a decision away, and I’ve already make that decision!

  2. In 2010 I have titled my Business Plan “Momentum” . This makes sense for me because I began in ernest on my web 2.0 systems in Q2 2009. And I feel that this year I must keep the momentum going in my favor. So I have a few pages from my business plan posted on a board at my desk so that I only need to look up to see them. They are my Schedule, My Daily Tasks, My Mindset Philosophy, and my Affirmations. If I take care of these things everything else will take care of itself.

    Your #2 point is something that I think many people overlook. It is very true that you become like the people you hang around most of the time, and is the reason it’s so important to surround yourself with positive, like-minded, upward moving people.

    I know when I made the sudden transition from bartender to full time wholesaler, it was necessary for me to make drastic changes to my lifestyle, which included distancing myself from some of the toxic people that I had let into my life.

  5. I agree with this post and I think it’s very important to reaffirm how habitual humans really are. By focusing on one goal per month, and getting an “accountability partner,” I have really turned around my life. It is also incredibly important to get really specific with your goals. For example, don’t say, “I want to lose weight.” Instead say, “I want to lose 10 pounds of fat, gain 3 pounds of muscle, and do it by 3 months from now.” Having a deadline is also critical to success.
