So Why Aren&#8217;t More Investing?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chainstoreage.com\/news\/study-women-influence-85-all-purchases\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Women make or influence as much as 85 percent of consumer decisions<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefemalefactor.com\/statistics\/statistics_about_women.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">91 percent of home-purchasing decisions<\/a>, but only represent <a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/money\/5141680\/investing-finance-gender-gap-pay-inequality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">25 percent of investors<\/a>. In other words, nine<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0out of 10 property purchases are decided by women. Slap the word \u201cinvestment\u201d in front of the word &#8220;property,&#8221; and suddenly women only make up 2.5 out of 10 of the individuals inputting funds, much to their long-term financial detriment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I started a monthly women\u2019s investing group in Denver this past year, people had <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feelings <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about that. Men felt discriminated against by a female investing group, and women wanted to be taken seriously because a lot of women-focused products simply have pink packaging and a higher price point (ahem, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2012\/08\/30\/bic-pen-for-her-amazon-reviews_n_1842991.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bic pens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Got it. I don\u2019t I like the color pink either, but when I read the 25 percent stat, I realized business as usual wasn\u2019t working for women. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-100979\" src=\"https:\/\/www.biggerpockets.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/adult-bar-beer-1267254.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"701\" height=\"336\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.biggerpockets.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/adult-bar-beer-1267254.jpg 701w, https:\/\/www.biggerpockets.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/adult-bar-beer-1267254-300x144.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 701px) 100vw, 701px\" \/><br \/>\n<em><br \/>\n<strong>Related:<\/strong> <a href=\"\/renewsblog\/money-matters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yes, Money &amp; Wealth DO Matter\u2014And Pretending Otherwise Hurts Everyone<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h2>How Many Men Invest<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a common pattern for male investors I know: <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A male relative of this theoretical individual invests\/thinks said guy should also invest.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Said guy does minimal online research until he finds an investing club.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Said guy attends a local investor meeting. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Said guy reads <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1612680194\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1612680194&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=biggerpocke0a-20&amp;linkId=32b6bd915f86f0db1c348d9bbdc3dddd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rich Dad Poor Dad<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=biggerpocke0a-20&amp;l=am2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1612680194\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" title=\"\"> <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and\/or thinks about reading <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rich Dad Poor Dad. <\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He feels ready and comfortable, reaches out to me and we email, at which point his wife and a lender are involved, and they move forward or stop.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>My Investing Journey<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And here\u2019s how my investment journey went: <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No one talked to me about investing, nor did I see myself as an investor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My parents bought the first place I lived in.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortly after, I got married and my husband convinced me and my parents that we should buy the place from them, and we did. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My husband started attending investment meetings. Within six months, he wanted to use <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a HELOC to buy an investment property<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was uncomfortable with the concept of a HELOC, but my husband is smart, so I agreed to move forward. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I attended my first and last investment meeting. My husband (and men in general) tend to be more comfortable with higher risk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/jessica-stillman\/science-oops-we-actually-totally-underestimated-womens-appetite-for-risk.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(or at least, they take different risks than women)<\/a>. They can attend a meeting, meet a few other men who look like them\/have a similar life path, and decide it\u2019s something they want to do. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For me personally, my husband introduced me to the concept. I was immediately turned off by investing meetings: too much bravado and not enough sharing. Reading was clearly a better way for me to consume information, but that 25 percent stat bothered (and still bothers) me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-96814\" src=\"https:\/\/www.biggerpockets.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/phonecoffee-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"702\" height=\"350\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.biggerpockets.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/phonecoffee-1.jpg 702w, https:\/\/www.biggerpockets.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/phonecoffee-1-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 702px) 100vw, 702px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>How Do We Change?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, how is an investing group for females different? It\u2019s much, much smaller and quieter. There is a speaker each month, who gives an overview of their expertise and then answers questions. Sorry, dudes, but people also take turns speaking. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And how is a women\u2019s investment group similar to a standard investment group?
