{"id":182849,"date":"2025-05-14T11:22:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-14T17:22:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.biggerpockets.com\/blog\/?p=182849"},"modified":"2025-05-16T13:54:34","modified_gmt":"2025-05-16T19:54:34","slug":"three-things-i-learned-about-the-fire-community-while-hosting-a-fire-cruise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.biggerpockets.com\/blog\/three-things-i-learned-about-the-fire-community-while-hosting-a-fire-cruise","title":{"rendered":"Three Things I Learned About the FIRE Community While Hosting a FIRE Cruise"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I went to my first FIRE meet-up in 2018 in Denver, Colorado. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It was <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">so<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> amazing to meet like-minded people and learn a lot about what people felt was <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and wasn\u2019t acceptable<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in our community.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> I remember the conversation centering <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a lot<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> on frugality, how to save hacks, and the like. Since then, I have seen the FIRE community grow up, and the underlying frugality give way to a more balanced approach to life. Here are three things I have learned about the FIRE community after hosting 120 people on a 2025 Royal Caribbean Cruise to the Caribbean.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The FIRE community is generous.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">They are the most generous with their time. It was incredible to see the support that everyone had for each other. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> someone needed help determining how to set up a will and trust<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, someone was there<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> If someone needed help determining if now was the time to quit their job, someone was there to review their numbers with them. Spoiler alert: They quit their job when they got back home!\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">They DO like to spend money.<\/span>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The FIRE community can get a bad rap for being too frugal. It is a trope in the community for a reason, BUT it turns out that if you offer something fun, like food, drinks, entertainment, and community, they are super happy to spend their money. It just has to make sense to them.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Freedom is the heart of the community.<\/span>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">really<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> isn\u2019t about quitting jobs, the rule of 25, or spreadsheets (though we all love these). It <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">really<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is about buying freedom. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Everyone <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">just<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> wants to be able to <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">make a choice on<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> what they do with their time and who they spend it with.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> They have realized that being able to stay home with their kids or help an ailing family member is a luxury that others don\u2019t have. FIRE <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">really<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is about the FI and not the RE.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It is an honor having a community of some of the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">smartest<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> people around also grow into very conscientious individuals who are <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">being intentional about<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> creating a life to \u201cretire to.\u201d It is funny because I keep saying \u201cthey,\u201d but as a prominent member of the FIRE community, I can relate to all of this.
