The issue is not just availability but affordability. Even with a greater supply of homes, unless interest rates drop and incomes increase, new homebuyers can\u2019t get onto the property ladder.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">House Prices Have Outstripped Incomes<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/opinion\/trump-cant-ignore-our-housing-crisis-home-mortgage-affordability-d934bee2?mod=Searchresults_pos2&amp;page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Wall Street Journal<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, in 2024, the median price for a single-family home was $412,500, as house prices outpaced growth in household income. <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biggerpockets.com\/blog\/home-insurance-costs-are-tanking-cash-flow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Rising insurance costs<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> have only added to the expense of homeownership.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In addition, the income required to afford an average 30-year mortgage has increased by 60% since 2021, according to the <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Journal<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, adding that the<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> diminishing construction workforce in the wake of <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> immigration clampdowns could also slow construction.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The need for homes and the increasing cost <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">to buy<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> them <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">sees<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> many U.S. cities caught in a Catch-22, with the<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/yimbyalliance.org\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> YIMBY<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> movement urging the need for more housing and the<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/podcasts\/archive\/2025\/01\/why-people-are-nimbys\/681225\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> NIMBY<\/span><\/a> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">people opposed to<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> denser housing concentrations in traditionally single-family neighborhoods.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> The result has been a chronic increase in housing prices.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Priciest Cities Have The Least Inventory<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Unsurprisingly, the most expensive U.S. markets are the most inventory-starved, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/investors.zillowgroup.com\/investors\/news-and-events\/news\/news-details\/2025\/US-housing-deficit-grew-to-4-7-million-despite-construction-surge\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">according to Zillow<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.
