As a result, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biggerpockets.com\/guides\/the-ultimate-guide-to-short-term-rental-properties\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">short-term rental<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> hosts stand to make a fortune, tripling prices and selling out in seconds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The dizzying prospect of earning <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/03\/28\/airbnb-nightly-rates-6000-world-cup-housing-frenzy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">$6,000 a night<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in some U.S. suburbs has even got regular homeowners looking to decamp to relatives while turning their primary residences over to the soccer-crazed hordes, while regular landlords are considering revamping their revenue models to capitalize on the <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biggerpockets.com\/blog\/rental-property-cash-flow-analysis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">cash flow<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> shock wave.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">World Cup 2026: A Unique Tournament<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The 2026 tournament is the first time that games will <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">be held<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in three countries\u2014the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, with 16 host cities\u201475% of the games will <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">be played<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in the U.S., with Mexico and Canada hosting 25% each, and an expanded 104-game format that extends the window of peak demand and potential cash flow for short-term rental hosts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to the <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/03\/24\/nyregion\/new-york-city-foreign-tourism.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">New York Times<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, the New York-New Jersey region is expecting more than 1 million visitors, and hotels in host cities have been quick to take advantage, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/6875796\/2025\/12\/10\/hotel-prices-in-world-cup-host-cities-surge-by-more-than-300-after-schedule-confirmed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">inflating prices by 300%<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A Smash-and-Grab Cash Flow Oasis Amid an International Visitor Drought<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For short-term rental hosts, the opportunity to seize on a soccer-fueled gold mine is welcome news at a time when overseas visits to the U.S. are markedly down in the wake of aggressive immigration tactics and conflict in the Middle East.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cEven a perfectly executed World Cup will not resolve the underlying structural challenges facing the hotel industry,\u201d Vijay Dandapani, president of the Hotel Association of New York City, told the <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Times<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">International inbound travel to the U.S. <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/suzannerowankelleher\/2026\/02\/20\/us-tourism-trump-slump-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">fell by nearly 5% in January<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> compared to the same time last year, marking the ninth straight month of decline, according to the U.S. Commerce Department&#8217;s National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO). A 22% year-over-year decline in Canadian visitors cost the U.S. economy $4.5 billion in 2025. In total, the U.S. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was estimated<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to have lost <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/09\/07\/where-are-travelers-going-if-they-arent-going-to-the-us.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">$30 billion<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in tourism dollars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Popular STR platforms such as Airbnb, Vrbo, and Booking.com <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">realize<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> that amid the booking downturn, the World Cup <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">presents<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> a short window of opportunity to make up for losses elsewhere in the year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIt\u2019s really this once-in-a-generational moment,\u201d Nathan Rotman, Airbnb\u2019s director of policy strategy for North America, told <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7019810\/2026\/02\/04\/world-cup-airbnb-fifa-cost\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Athletic<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. \u201cIt\u2019s a real opportunity for cities to show themselves off, but also to test out whether they can accommodate fans.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Property manager Bobby Roufaeal, who <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is managing<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> over a dozen STRs in New Jersey, is tripling rates <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">for<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> his units and expects a single luxury property to generate about $240,000 during the tournament, encouraging hosts to see the potential for significant income.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThey\u2019re like, listen, I\u2019ll figure it out. I\u2019ll go stay with my relatives for the month or for a few weeks just to be able to capitalize on this revenue,\u201d Roufaeal told <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/financialpost.com\/news\/retail-marketing\/airbnbs-topping-6000-a-night-world-cup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bloomberg<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, explaining how owners plan to vacate their personal residences to capitalize on the cash flow potential.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">$4,000 Income Reality Check<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">International accounting firm <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/airbnb.app.box.com\/s\/riy8ulen3labs1ykhfo863hrs57nuesi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Deloitte<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, commissioned by Airbnb, estimated that hosts in U.S. World Cup cities could bring in $4,000 on average during the tournament, which translates to $262 per night, even in pricier coastal cities. That number jumps up to $5,700 on average in New York, the highest of all host cities. Additionally, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realtor.com\/news\/trends\/airbnb-home-host-search-world-cup-summer-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Airbnb has offered first-time hosts an incentive of $750<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to use the platform and host their first guests by July 31, 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cDemand for World Cup stays on Airbnb is surging, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">giving residents of host cities the opportunity<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to boost their incomes by sharing their homes and the communities they love,\u201d Dave Stephenson, Airbnb\u2019s chief business officer, said in a statement shared with Realtor.com. \u201cThere\u2019s truly never been a better time to become a host on Airbnb.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Demand Spike and STR Regulation Waivers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.airdna.co\/world-cup-short-term-rental-data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">AirDNA is tracking demand for short-term rentals<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in advance of the World Cup. As expected, the numbers will change by city and date as we get closer to the games.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Municipalities have <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">been forced<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to adjust their STR policies to ensure there are enough beds to accommodate the surge in visitors. In <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.airdna.co\/blog\/kansas-city-world-cup-hosting-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Kansas City<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, which will host six matches and where 650,000 visitors <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">are expected<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to descend on a city with only 65,000 hotel rooms, the demand has had far-reaching repercussions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThey [the city] had reached out to the Kansas City Alliance and said, \u2018Hey, we are about 500 listings short of what we need. Will you help us bring new hosts to the area?\u201d Tyann Marcink Hammond, president of the Missouri Vacation Home Alliance, said during an <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alexandanniepodcast.com\/1st-of-the-month-bonus-annies-big-leap-plus-tyanns-2026-world-cup-str-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">episode<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> of the <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rentresponsibly.org\/alex-annie-finding-aha-moments-in-the-vacation-rental-community\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Alex and Annie Vacation Rental Podcast<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, as cited by <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rentresponsibly.org\/world-cup-2026-host-cities-revisit-short-term-rental-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Rent Responsibly<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The scope of influence for hosts extends well beyond the Kansas City limits, where short-term rental rules differ markedly, with rental caps and bans on non-hosted rentals. These have temporarily <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">been waived<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to accommodate the influx. \u201cThey understand the economic benefits, and they want that in their community,\u201d Hammond said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In June 2025, Jackson County legislators proposed an emergency pause on the reclassification of short-term rentals from residential to commercial properties. However, the reclassification tripled the tax exposure for some STR owners, angering many of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThis is outrageous, and I absolutely will shut down <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">prior to<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the World Cup,\u201d Laura Williams, vice president of the Kansas City Short Term Rental Alliance, told <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kshb.com\/news\/local-news\/jackson-county-legislators-propose-pause-on-short-term-rental-tax-changes-ahead-of-world-cup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">KSHB 41<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For small landlords who might not have a regulatory attorney at hand, understanding the quagmire of changing rules could result in fines and forced cancellations during a potential windfall event. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Ironically, New York, led by soccer-crazed mayor Zohran Mamdani, has some of the strictest STR rules in the country, banning stays <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">under<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> 30 days, which it <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/abc7ny.com\/post\/fifa-world-cup-airbnb-nyc-rejects-bid-lift-restrictions-short-term-rentals-remain-limited-during-soccer-tournament\/18707321\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">has refused to <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">relinquish<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> This move means STR business goes to New Jersey and elsewhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Final Thoughts: The World Cup and Beyond\u2014Where STR Landlords Can Profit the Most<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The World Cup has <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">presented<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> an interesting debate: How much revenue can STR hosts in major cities hosting major events <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">make<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and is it enough to offset the high <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">cost<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> of doing business (taxes, insurance, expensive properties, and interior furnishings) in those cities?<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For many landlords, the lure of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> a <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">high <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">volume of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> revenue over a short period, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">as opposed to<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> ongoing monthly rental income and the hassle of chasing <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">up rents<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and dealing with evictions, might be enough to <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">cause<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> them to switch strategies and chase fast cash.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">For cities with stringent STR rental rules, such as New York, lobbying efforts by STR companies and strategic affiliation with event organizers, such as <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.airbnb.com\/e\/fifa-new-host\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Airbnb\u2019s pact with FIFA<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, may make them rue the tourism revenue they are turning away.
