Wellington Polo Update: Piaget USPA Gold Cup Championship: Valiente VS. Alegria


The Valiente team composed of Bob Jornayvaz, Santi Torres, Sapo Caset and Adolfo Cambiaso meets the Alegria team composed of Julian Mannix, Clemente Zavaleta, Mariano Aguerre and Hilario Ulloa after gaining victory on Wednesday, March 19, semifinals of 2014 USPA Piaget Gold Cup.

During the first semifinal, Valiente won by 14-10 against Audi (Marc Ganzi, Gonzalito Pieres, Rodrigo Andrade and Gonzalo Del Tour).

Torres of Valiente got the opening goal followed by a goal from teammate Caset, 2-0. Audi's 10-goaler Pieres finally got his team back with a goal from the field. Teammate Andrade made the tying goal, 2-2. The first chukker ended with Cambiaso and Torres adding another goal to Valiente, 4-2.

In the second chukker, Valiente continued to lead as the chukker ended with 6-4 scores. And the first half ended with Valiente still on the lead, 7-6.

Valiente left Audi scoreless in the fourth chukker with goals from Caset and Cambiaso the only scores of the chukker, 9-6.

Caset scored twice with Santos and Cambiaso adding single goals in the fifth chukker while Pieres and Ganzi scoring each for Audi, 13-8.

In the last chukker, Audi couldn't catch up anymore as the final horn sounded for the 14-10 Valiente victory.

Caset led the score with seven goals, Cambiaso added four and Torres scored three for the Valiente's victory. While Andrade and Pieres each scored four and Ganzi and Del Tour each added one goal for the losing effort.

As for the second semifinal match, Algeria defeated Lechuza Caracas (Victor Vargas, Nico Pieres, Juan Martin Nero and Nico Espain) in an overtime, 8-7.

The first chukker went scoreless and the second chukker ended with only 2-0 scores, Lechuza Caracas in the lead. The first half ended with Lechuza Caracas still on the lead, 4-2.

The two teams traded goals in the fourth chukker, 5-3. In the fifth chukker, Lechuza Caracas continued to lead by two goals, 7-5.

But Alegria turned up the heat in the sixth chukker. Mannix and Ulloa managed to tie the scores into 7-7. Both teams struggled to earn the go-ahead goal but the final horn sounded it was all even.

Alegria managed to score a come-from-behind overtime win over Lechuza Caracas, 8-7.

Ulloa led all scoring with five goals, including the game winner, and Mannix and Zavaleta add two and one goals respectively. Pieres scored fourth times, Nero twice and Vargas once in the loss.

Valiente and Alegria match was on Sunday, March 23, 2014.
