Why I will do RE investing

A new book I've picked up is "The Midas Touch" by Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki. In a snippet it talks about the characteristics of an entrepreneur. As I've been working through the book its gotten me to thinking more and more about why real estate investing for me is something I'm pursuing and how I can work on being a better entrepreneur.

During a slow day at my regular job I got to thinking why this investing is so fit for me and how I will fit well into it. My job is working in theatre. Now although most people assume I'm an actor off the bat, I'm actually working on the sets building them. So right there I've got a great idea of how things are constructed, rough ideas of what things cost, and rough ideas of how long things should take. Working on plans in a fast paced environment where time is of the essence I've become very accustomed to planning out very minute details in order to ensure things flow smoothly. And better yet, if something doesn't work out according to plan, these jobs in theatre need to get finished in time so a solution is always figured out. There is no possibility of going an extra week or month because the show opens and tickets are already sold. I truly believe that this type of work ethic will apply very well in the real world of real estate investing. I need to remember next time I'm feeling nervous that all of the planning and organization and homework needed for putting up a show is very similar to what is expected for finding and rehabbing investment properties.

Another great asset I've developed in theatre is the personable skills. People move in and out very quickly in theatre. There is a lot of turn over as people move from show to show and place to place. It becomes a very small world so integrity and the right work ethic sometimes precedes you. And, because one is always looking for their next gig networking plays a big role. I feel without this training I would perhaps be too nervous to meet people at REI meetings and learn from others.

These are just a few thoughts that hit me yesterday and gave me a boost of confidence to keep moving forward.

  1. Haha... yes, I've got almost all of those. The only one I haven't picked up yet, its at the library because I've checked, is Think and Grow Rich. That was actually the one I was looking for when I picked up Midas Touch. I find all of those books very inspiring and surprising to read because a lot of it involves a different mind set I hadn't ever come across.

  2. Steven, this is a great personal analysis. Have you read "Think and Grow Rich", or "Rich Dad, Poor Dad", or "The Millionaire Next Door", or "Who Moved My Cheese". The latter is an excellent short read.
