Home Buying: You vs Your Parents (New Infographic)

If there is one thing that younger buyers always tell me, it's that they are finding it more difficult to buy a home than their parents did at their age. From the recession of 2008 to the student loan bubble, many of today's young adults are finding that buying a home is proving to be harder than they anticipated. But if you ask many Baby Boomers about how it was for them 30 years ago, you hear the same thing: houses were expensive, the economy was so-so, and it took a lot of work to make their dream of home ownership happen. This all got me thinking: when it comes to buying a home, do today's young adults really have it harder than the Baby Boomers did? I decided to investigate further, by comparing not only median income and home price trends over the past 3 decades, but also accounting for related factors like interest rates and the ratio of single to double-income households. It took time, but the results were well worth it! I've compiled my conclusions into this easy-to-read infographic, which provides a concrete answer to the popular real estate question of the day: who really had it tougher, today's Generation Y or the Baby Boomers before them?
