08.08.14 Maximizing my BiggerPockets membership

Normal 1407549038 Puter

I’m guessing there are as many way to use BiggerPockets as there are ways to invest in real estate.

Here’s my strategy to get the most out of the site:

Spend a little time on the site every day. I used to stay on BP until I could find one topic to post on. Now I spend a bit more time and a few more posts each day, but the emphasis is still on consistency and on not spending an hour or more on the site.

I also like to surf BiggerPockets on my smart phone when I’m out and about. Waiting for the barista to call out my coffee, in the waiting room at the doctors, on an ergonomic break at work – all a great opportunity for a short post on a BP forum or to weed out key word alerts.

I really enjoy welcoming new members. When I first joined the site, I didn’t feel like I had a lot to offer and my geographic key word alerts were mostly returning new members in my area, so I felt like the welcome committee. I moved away from that as I discovered that the landlord forums are my niche, but I’ve moved back to trying to reach out to new members. Even if they don’t live near me and don’t have the same investment strategy I do, I can usually offer some tidbit and a warm welcome.

I intentionally set aside time to research specific topics that I am not actively involved in but would like to learn more about. An example is rent to own as a possible exit strategy. I put it on my to do list and spend an hour or so poking around the site, and summarize my learnings from the session so I’m not starting cold next time I look into it.

And lastly, I feel I’m building relationships for the future. We’re not looking for deals right now, but I would not be at all surprised if, at some point in the future, we partner or do some kind of deal with someone on BP. Having the time to slowly build quality relationships is a blessing. When I send a colleague request, I send a note about why I’m connecting with them. It isn’t always deep, but it provides them some context at least.

I know I need to figure out File Place, discover what benefit there is to following someone, and spent more time learning than sharing, but that might send me over my daily limit! I love this site, and upgraded to show appreciation for all the great free content.

  1. You're way more deliberate than me. I'm taking notes.
