01-23-15 Personal Social Media Strategy

Normal 1422074922 Bp

We talk on Bigger Pockets about using social media to vet tenants. But how much energy are we spending on managing what others could be seeing when they try to vet us?

When I google my name, not much pops up about me. I share a name with an actress/singer, so that muddies the water, and it is just a fairly common name. What does pop up on the first page of results is my Collecting Rent e-book on Amazon, which is kind of cool.

When I google my name and city, most of the results are about me, but I don’t want to be defined by my city, because we tend to move every 5-10 years.

A fifth of all hiring managers who responded to a survey agreed that information from a candidate’s social media pages caused them to hire him or her. The most commonly cited points included that a candidate projected a professional image, displayed a well-rounded personality with a wide range of interests, demonstrated good communication skills, or had posted great references on his or her profile.

If I wanted to distinguish myself, I would have used Michele A Fischer on all of my profiles and on my book. I would also use the same photo on all of my profiles to show a cohesive look. Not that my image is cohesive. I tend to use BiggerPockets for my real estate identity and LinkedIn for my full time job identity.

My follow-up is that I need to go to a professional photographer and get a professional photo taken to replace my paddle boarding photo on LinkedIn.
