Choosing the Right Paint Colors For Your Home

One of easiest and best ways to give your home a quick makeover and increase it's value is to do a little painting. Interior painting can spruce up a room in just a few short hours. However, choosing the right color is very important to achieve the desired results. You want to make sure that your rooms are appealing and comfortable. Here are a few tips on how to choose the right colors for your home decorating project.

Start Small

If you don’t yet know which color is going to be the best for a room, you should experiment with colors in a smaller room such as a bathroom or small hallway. You will be able to see the actual colors and how they will appear in your home.

Take the Mood You Want Into Account

During your color selection process, decide what kind of mood you want to evoke. For instance, a bedroom color should be soothing and calming, so cool, soft colors can evoke that feeling. For social areas such as a dining room, you should choose colors for the feeling you want to evoke. Deep blue-greens can bring a more formal feeling, while warmer, brighter colors can bring an air of excitement.

Pay Attention to Your Lighting

There are valuable reasons those light boxes exist in paint stores. You can test paint chips for different lighting:

  • Fluorescent lighting can cast a blue tone
  • Incandescent light will accentuate yellows and warm tones
  • Natural daylight will bring the truest color

By using these light boxes, you can determine the way a particular color will look with the type of lighting you have in the room you will be painting.

Test Your Choices

Don’t be afraid to pick up some samples and paint a large area of the wall. And, don’t be afraid to experiment with colors that may not be in your comfort zone. You may find that those strong, vibrant colors you have been avoiding will add a unique look. You may even want to consider painting the ceiling to add drama.

Decorative Finishes Can Add Depth

You can add decorative finishes such as glazes, or burnished mineral/metal finishes to add a dramatic or subtle visual texture. These finishes can transform the look of dull, flat walls.

Look at the Different Angles of the Room

You should consider how the different walls of the rooms interact with each other. Look at the walls and how their colors will work together. As you walk through the rooms, you will want the colors to complement each other into a cohesive look.
