Boring Property? Just Add Landscape Design

Now that the spring has arrived in Australia, it's the right time to think about the exterior improvement of any featureless house you may own or manage. It's best to act just before the summer months – when everybody will be thinking of backyard barbecue gatherings, pool parties or just hanging out around the new deck. And if your property, more specifically its exterior, is lacking some fun facilities or a beautiful garden – some landscaping can literally save your home.

Landscape design provides a plethora of ways to enhance the appearance of a front or back yard and even the house itself. Before we go through some of the most popular methods to add curb appeal to your property, let's briefly outline the difference between landscaping and hardscaping. Classic (soft) landscaping relates to all the living greenery found outside – be it a lawn, a flower, herb, vegetable or other kind of garden, backyard green spaces and hedges. Whereas hardscaping is the design work when building decks, patios, path and driveways, pools and the like – generally, everything that's not vegetation but still contributes to the overall look of the residence.

Depending on the effort and budget you're willing to sacrifice, you can go for a minor yard improvement project or a full garden (re)design which usually includes backyard landscaping as well. Most home owners share that family members enjoy having some kind of water feature installed somewhere in the yard. That could range from a large swimming pool to a tiny ornamental pond built next to a cottage-style garden – anything will do.

Dream of having a spot that's not so sunny? Go for some trees then! Choose just a single small tree, maybe a bonsai, or walk the extra mile and plant the real deal – large fruit trees. Keep in mind that statistics are unambiguous: properties which feature a shady green spot, often located in the backyard, are more successful than those having no trees planted at all.

Irrigation is the next point you would want to consider. If you are serious about property landscaping in Sydney and plan to maintain a rich flora within your yard, you will definitely need relevant watering too. Sprinkler systems are your best option to ensure the lawn grass grows lush and healthy. However, you might want to install drip irrigation or another more complicated solution if your gardening plans include a large landscape design project that will last for decades.
