Real Estate Books

The is the first blog post of my life. 2015 is the year of new beginnings for me.   I am staring this journey to expand my sphere of influence by engaging people in multiple formats.  I would also like the blog to keep me honest and track of all the things I have tried to grow my RE business.  Ideally this forum will allow me to show what works and what doesn't to the BP community.   In 2014 I spent a lot of time going to tons of RE events.  Where most of the time I met a lot of people interested in doing deals they just never did any deals.  However in 2015, I am so glad that I went to those meeting and networked with like a handful of like minded individuals at local REIAs and Meetups, because those that were serious investors...have allowed me to possibly partner with them on future deals.  I never ever thought this would happened to me.  As I am not a pro,  but truly learning the real estate business from the ground up.

In the past few months I have been devouring some great books in finance as well as real estate.  I finally finished "The Intelligent Investor" by Ben Graham.  Great book if you really want to understand Mr. Market and how not to time the market.  After that I finished an audiobook of "Think and Grow Rich" by Napolean Hill.  The one thing this book makes me realize is my lack of purpose in investing and the need for definiteness of purpose.  Once you set your mind to something you can really achieve anything you imagination can dream up.  Often times I think I don't have the credentials or experience to succeed, but often those that are the most successful merely just get up more times and refuse to give up no matter what.  Napolean Hill's book is very inspirational and motivational, similar to Rich Dad Poor Dad but a little more historic.  I love all the people and case studies he analyzes. Currently I am reading Gary Keller's Millionaire Real Estate Investor.  This actually gives me a road map on how to effectively expand my real estate network and focus on targeting my marketing to the right audience in my area.

I am also determined in 2015 to get on a budget so I can buy more rental properties.  I would also like to complete two flips which will provide more funds for rentals.  My two recent property tax bills came in and I didn't have the money in savings to pay them off.  I should of listened to more experienced BP members who mention to ALWAYS have a reserve fund in CASH.  I feel like I am currently living paycheck to paycheck though I am not.  I just need to learn to pay myself first which is alluded to in the Richest Man in Babylon.  I am listening to this book as an audiobook and I can't wait to get into my car each time to pickup where I left of.  I find it very interesting that the way people managed money centuries ago still applies to our daily lives.

  1. @Anil Samuel I've learned quite a bit in the first five months of this year. After reading this blog I took your advice and started utilizing audio books. I have listened to Rich Dad Poor Dad and Rich Dad's Guide to Investing. Currently listening to Keller Millionaire Real Estate Investor. Focusing on one area takes a lot of discipline. Something I am working on too! :-)

  2. My first quarter just took off in a major way!  I have put in a bunch of offers and listings in the past week.  I love these books and learning about real estate.  Have you read Pitch Anything by Oren Klaff, awesome book;  Really motivational and teaches you how to approach people.  Also, I am trying to read the one thing by Gary Keller.  I need to really focus on one aspect of my business before I expand to other areas.  How are things on your end?

  6. Hey Abou,

I appreciate the feedback.  Seems like you will be getting a good background suitable for real estate.  I wish I could of bought something years ago when I was in school.  The timing just didn't work out back then.  I am actually glad it didn't since that was at the height of the market.  However, if I started house hacking back in college, I can only imagine where I would be now with my RE investing.  That would be awesome if you got a quadplex!  Are you going to self manage, while in school? It's cool you are willing to do anything it takes to be successful.  I think that's what sets apart Millionaire Real Estate investors from others.  If you have the knowledge, apply it, and work harder than everyone else to make deals happen, it's just a matter of time before you are successful, not even a question on whether you will be.  I completely agree with your statement about not being born into wealth.  I used to think this would put me in a worse position for the future, but I am so glad for the way I was brought up because it humbles me when I deal with others.  If I ever come close to getting a big head I just remember where and how it all started.  It is so true that if you have everything to lose and put it all on the line then you will do your absolute best and pull out all the stops before you every dream of failing.  If your family was already rich then you probably wouldn't have much pressure to succeed IMO.

P.S.  Check out Millionaire Next Door

  7. LOVE THIS!. I am currently building a reading list on real estate and finance. And Next fall start my B.A in Finance. But won't let a degree stop me from building a empire while studying. 2015 my business partner and I acquiring a 4 unit duplex hopefully through FHA.  What ever I have to do, get three jobs, rental agent I don't care I will.  One thing I came to realize yes it sucks not to be the son or daughter of Bill gates, but having notting if its the right person is ones BIGGEST ADVANTAGE against someone who was born with it all. Only way is UP!
