Corktown Detroit - Driving Tour

Welcome back to Detroit Neighborhood Tours! This week Max and I take you to Corktown, one of Detroit's oldest neighborhoods.

If this is your first time checking out this blog, welcome! We created this blog because we're local to the Detroit area, and we were constantly fielding questions from investors about what's happening in the city. As locals, we're always looking to provide more information to the BP community about Detroit, especially for those of you considering an investment in the city. We figured the more knowledge you had the better, so without further adieu...

Corktown:

Normal 1443187983 Corktown Map

History:

  • Originally populated with Irish immigrants migrating to Detroit due to the Great Irish Potato Famine in the 1840's, Corktown's name comes from County Cork, Ireland
  • By the Civil war, the Irish immigrants had spread throughout the city, and German immigrants began making inroads in Corktown
  • The population decreased drastically in the middle of the 20th Century with the creation of the Lodge and Fisher Freeway's which cut through Corktown's north and eastern borders
  • Massive development projects have begun to spring up recently, such as the new Quicken Loans Technology Center

Landmarks Covered:

  • Michigan Central Station
  • Roosevelt Park
  • Old Tiger Stadium
  • Michigan Ave

Next Episode: Brightmore

We'd love to hear your thoughts on future episodes so let us know:
