Q1* - Ask yourself this question every month.

Question: Why does it have to be this way?

Normal 1462921060 Question

Oftentimes, I find myself accepting less than ideal circumstances. The above quote is a great reminder that I can choose to make a change if I want to.

Once a month, I take this question and think deeply about my life, my relationships, my business, etc. More often than not, I do not make any wholesale changes. However, it does give me the chance to reflect and decide if I need to modify any of my behaviors or actions. Almost every time, I walk away with something I could do better.

For example, one day when my phone battery was running low and I didn't have a charger, I asked myself, "why does it have to be this way?" I thought for a minute and put it on my to do list to get a charger for my house, my office, and my briefcase. Since that day, I rarely have to worry about having a low battery.

Another time, I was sitting on the sidelines watching other people chase their dreams when I asked, "why does it have to be this way?"  It was that question that prompted me to buy my first rental house 10 years ago.  And, buying that initial investment property propelled me into so many exciting opportunities relationally, financially, and even spiritually.  It changed my life.

Sometimes a simple question is the only catalyst we need to make a little change that will make a big difference.

Why does it have to be this way for you?

  2. Douglas, I ask myself this all the time and it's really why I want to get stuff together and freaking get more properties. I used to work overseas and I made great money. In 2012 my son was born 4 mnths early and stayed in the hospital 11 months before he was stable enough to come home. I had to quit my job cause I had to be home with my son. I went through my savings in 3 yrs...and I soon had to figure out what to do next. Yes, I am married but we were used to the 2 salary income. I wish I figured real estate out then, but hey no regrets. But I thought to myself, why are things this way, why cant I stay home with my child, why am I struggling? What can I do to make money so I can stay home and spend time with my son? I wasted money and tried my hand at a car dealers license.....ugghhh I failed. But I truly believe I can make investing in real estate work. It has to. I need to ensure my kids have something in the future. My son will never be able to support himself so I keep kicking myself to get on track and just DO IT! Not for me but for him. So 2018 is the year! Failure is not an option. I just need to be smart about how I move forward.  I keep reading these success stories on BP and there is no reason I can not do this.

  3. I certainly think you should pick it back up, Douglas.

As someone just getting started in the Memphis market, seeing a the thoughts of another investor nearby like this really connects. It makes things real. Most importantly this is a topic that really connects to people because at some point we all ask ourselves that question; although, we don't always do something or consider the depths of its meaning. You did. Because you did you helped inspire me from reading it.

  4. You know reading this, really leaves a sense of impact right now with where I am in life. It was this very question that I've been contemplating on so many days of the week for the last few months that lead me to where I am now. The beginning steps of a journey in Real Estate Investing. This particular blog is a reminder of a struggle currently faced, and the truth that so a man thinketh, he becomes. So thanks for the little adage, Douglas. It helped to be an encouragement today.

    1. Jonathan, I'm glad the adage connected with you.

I put this blog on pause shortly after the post above and your comment gives me encouragement to consider picking it back up again.  So thanks to you, too!
