A Brief Introduction

Introduction

"Member since September 18, 2015 (last active 10 minutes ago)" That's right!

I have been interested in real estate for a long time. My father, mother, and godfather are all in real estate to varying degrees. When I was younger, I followed my dad and godfather around to their jobs. In middle school I did some basic bookkeeping and answered phones for my father and godfather's company. I painted houses for a contractor they used during high school summers in Portland, Oregon. When I graduated college, my first job was for a development consulting company.

I became a member of Bigger Pockets in September last year when I stumbled upon the BiggerPockets Ultimate Beginner's Guide to Real Estate Investing ("UBG"). I was waiting in court for my client's case to be called and looking for ways to leave the rat race. The UBG reinvigorated my interest in real estate and I have tripled-down on my real estate education.

My Recent Real Estate Education

Lately I have marathoned the Bigger Pockets podcast. In the past few weeks I have made it through the first fifty-eight. It's a great program. I can't wait to catch up to the current material. I absolutely love hearing about real estate investing techniques, niches and successes.

Listeners of the podcast will know that Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki is one of the most frequently mentioned books. I had read it in the late 1990's when it was given to me by my godfather. I re-read it a couple weeks ago. It holds up--mostly.

I've also started enjoying another podcast favorite, The E-Myth Revisited by Michael E. Gerber. It is interesting. It's a little fluffy in the beginning but the last part has some pretty valuable material.

I read Diary of a New Construction Project by J. Scott yesterday. I am glad I did. I haven't studied new construction as much as I have rehabs. It made me want to read J. Scott's other books.

Real World Education

My father and godfather are still around to serve as mentors. I ask them as much as I think they'll tolerate. I also talk about real estate to everyone who will listen.

I study Oregon's online real estate listings in Pendleton, Hermiston, Portland, Salem and Eugene. These markets are all very different. I am not ready to move on any of the opportunities I see but I am excited. I am starting to see opportunities. Soon I'll be adding value!

Next

I am going to keep studying the educational materials I have identified and the markets I intend to enter. I will keep running numbers in pursuit of properties that fit my business plan and investment criteria. I will continue to look for deals and value I can add.
