Getting Into the Real Estate Game

So you're thinking about jumping into the real estate game. Where do you start? What do you do? How do you get to where you want to be? These all might be questions that you don't know the answer to or maybe you have some idea, but what is your first step? Everybody has some idea of what they want to do or someday achieve, but it can be difficult starting out and committing to something you really don't have much experience with. Resource like BiggerPockets is great because there's a plethora of information available at your finger tips, but the best way of learning something is to dive right in and make mistakes. The more mistakes you make, the better you will become at not making them.

I think the first and most important step is to find someone that you can learn from. You may have to dig deep in your own personal network or go out and find someone that you admire and one day could achieve similar or surpass their success. Make sure they are willing and ready to offer assistance to you and if it means you have to work for free, it might be something you start off as a part-time gig. I happened to have a friend that worked at a local bank and he got me an interview for a sales job as a personal banker. I had no idea what I was interviewing for, but I was very confident that I could sell. I got the job, but it took me a good amount of time to learn it and I had a really great support system from my managers. That led to many other failures which in time lead to many successes.

If you want to be successful at real estate or anything in life, keep in mind that it's going to take time and lots of it. The more time you put into this business, the more you will learn and the greater you will become. It's very easy to make mistake and get down on yourself, but just remember that everyone sitting at the top all went through the same pitfalls, they just started sooner and never gave up.

  1. So Joe were you selling multiple accounts at Wells Fargo? J/K  And what are your responsibilities at your current job with Patch of Land with whom I have a number of loans with too many currently delinquent.

A very good point that you make that I wish I had done a long time ago when I was looking for a job in a particular field but there were no openings at the time is to offer to work for free and then do it with enthusiasm.

    1. Hello Robert,

The job was at Washington Mutual, but I later became a mortgage consultant at Wells Fargo.  I would love to find out what's going on with those loans. I'll get a hold of our capital markets team and we can further discuss it.

I'm a business development manager, so I work with real estate investors and brokers bringing new opportunities.

Just curious, if you don't mind, what field/position were you looking into?
