Can you be to old to invest in real estate

Im 50 years old and have want to invest in real estate for quite a while. Recently I inherited some money( not a huge amount) that I would like to invest. I live in the Portland,Oregon market and housing prices are high. 

My question is, can someone invest in real estate for the first time at 50 and still have a long enough window to make money if they are a buy and hold investor.
