in-law vs multi-family

Hello--

I am a first time buyer looking to a multi-family home to be an owner-occupied investment. My question is whether there is any difference in buying a multi-family versus a house with an in-law apartment I would rent out. I guess I'm wondering if there any drawbacks in regards to taxes or anything I should be aware of.
