I'm absolutely brand new to real estate investing. I'm wanting to invest in flipping and building a portfolio of multi-family rentals. I am also looking into investing in hard money lenders. I am currently opening and transferring funds into a self directed IRA for this purpose. What percentage of my funds should I dedicate to each investment and where do I start? Thanks
The first thing to do is to compare custodians. Shop for price, service, and knowledge. There are a ton of self-directed IRA companies. Not all are custodians. Be sure to do your research. Another important thing is to determine your strategy. If your IRA will hold multiple assets estimate the cost of an LLC vs the cost of multiple assets in an account. Most custodians charge based on value and that can be very very expensive. Good luck.
Thank you Yvonne. I already established the Self directed IRA and am waiting for my former IRA holder to transfer funds to the new account.
I think the question of asset allocation is entirely personal. Some love allocating their whole IRA to loans, others prefer syndications, others rentals, and on and on. I think anyone telling you a specific answer on a public forum is being irresponsible. They don't know you, your goals and background, etc.
