Can I rent Basement for Rent of an Single Family Homes

Hello,

First of all thanks for those who are helping Newbies like me to learn a lot from the forum and posts that others have posted.

My Question:

Currently I own a Ranch Style Single Family home with Partially finished Basement, I am planning to extend the unfinished basement and list it as Basement for Rent.

Would that be legal?

If not, Is it possible to convert Single Family home type to Multi Family home?
