Fair Housing Protected Class

Alright BP fam, here’s the question for today....

A family is looking to rent a house in a local town, and they fit the “familial status” protected class.

They know that the previous renter, a single man living alone, was charged $450 or $500 a month in rent. The man is moving out and the family is seeking to move in. The landlord is asking for more money per month because they’re a family (of 4).

Does this situation fall under the Federal Housing Act? Is the landlord exhibiting a discriminatory act in the eyes of the Fair Housing Act?

This landlord does not have a broker overseeing the transaction.

Thanks in advance BP fam!
