Question about colleague request

Quick question. I get a lot of colleague requests and then once I accept everything goes silent. Am I missing something? If someone sends a message I reply, but with no message I simply hit accept and move on. Is there an unspoken rule I’m missing? Is there something everybody knows, but me?
