Self directed IRAs for funding

I have (what I consider) a good chunk of change sitting in a traditional IRA. I'd like to use that money to fund flips (in and out in less than 120 days) and/or use it for transactional funding.

The financial advisor who is my rep on the account says that it can't be used in a self directed manner for real estate investing. What I'm reading online contradicts that.

The account is doing quite well, so I'm not too eager to use the money for REI, but I'd like to have that option for when I come across stellar deals. That being said, how are you guys using SDIs to fund deals?
