UMich Int'l Sgporean Undergrad Seeking House Hack for PhD

Nice to meet you! I am Gordon, a rising senior at the University of Michigan and an international student from Singapore. I will be applying to Computer Science PhDs this Fall. I am tired of paying rent and hope to house hack during my PhD so that I can at the very least "pay rent" towards equity in a property. I have started reading the house hacking book and am hoping to connect with someone experienced who would be willing to mentor me. I acknowledge that I have little to offer as someone starting out hence I was hoping that someone might be willing to mentor me on the account of shared experiences. So if you are a UMich alum, were an international student or went to graduate school I would love to meet over a Zoom call and chat about your real estate investment journey. As someone who has being doing independent research work since freshman year while providing timely updates to a research mentor, you can trust that I will not waste your time or let you down. Otherwise, I thank you for reading my post.

How much of a mortgage have you qualified for with your income and cash?

I'm not at that stage yet. My research so far says that as a PhD student on 1042-S income (fellowship stipend), a Freddie Mac conventional loan is going to be my best bet.
